iariaThe Bletchley Circle - I watched the first season and I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately the ending fell apart a bit. The final confrontation between Susan and the killer didn’t work for me because it made absolutely no sense for her to go to him alone. If he’d actually kidnapped her daughter, which is what I’d though had happened at first, I would have bought it but just based on a threat? No, that was far too dumb especially for clever and sensible Susan. That said it was still really enjoyable largely because of the women whom I loved and the relationships between them. I loved how they all had their own skills and how wonderfully they worked together.
Agents of SHIELD 1x18 'Providence'
I liked it. It both made me interested to see the next episode and want to go back and rewatch the season.
• I'm really enjoying team Hydra. They're pretty fun. I'm also interested in the Garrett/Ward relationship. I like that Ward is Hydra not because of any belief of his own or for money/power but because of loyalty to Garrett.
• Coulson was annoying me a bit. In several ways - his attitude towards Trip, though I understand where it comes from, him refusing to consider he could be compromised, him unilaterally deciding to erase everyone's identities, etc - but the thing bothering me most is his attitude towards Melinda.
He completely has the right to be angry at her and even to end their friendship. She betrayed him even if she had the best of intentions. And his lack of obvious anger at Fury, even though what he did was worse, also makes sense considering he thought Fury was dead and he wasn't there to be angry at like Melinda is. But even knowing and understanding all that I still found myself wanting to smack him upside the head.
• I found Coulson's walk-through of the Bus after take-off and his getting bad news after bad news amusing.
• I was annoyed at the beginning with the Talbot/Coulson conversation full of 'tell your men' and 'your boys', meanwhile standing on either side of him are May and Skye.
• I'm finding Hydra Ward a lot more interesting. I didn't dislike Ward (usually) and in fact in most of his one-on-one scenes with his team (minus Skye) I really enjoyed him. In fact one regret I do have about this reveal is the loss of the nice little character interactions between him and the others. Especially his scenes with Simmons and Fitz. Him dismissively calling Jemma 'the scientist' made me a bit sad and the plane jump scene he was telling Rayna about was one of my favourite scenes of the show. Since his feelings for Skye are real I'm hoping that he does have some honest affection for the rest of the team as well and we will get to see that again.
• I was also impressed with Brett Dalton and how he made the Ward we thought we knew and Hydra Ward so different.
• Thus far the show is giving me what I wanted with Ward. He is 100% Hydra and not brainwashed or a triple agent. But he's also not a cut-out bad guy. Those are both things I was worried about, particularly the first, so I'm willing to give the show trust on what they're doing with him. What I don't want to see in the future is his love for Skye redeeming him.
• Ward/Skye was actually interesting to me! I enjoyed their phone call quite a bit. The preview did have me rolling my eyes so we'll see if that lasts.
• I understand the Doylist reasons for why the Bus wasn't full of SHIELD agents when it left The Hub but unfortunately it doesn't work for me on a Watsonian level. The Hub is huge, full of agents and only Trip wanted to go with Coulson to keep fighting Hydra? Seriously? I just don't buy it and I really wish they'd crammed a least a couple extras in there.
• "Agent May was the primary threat so I let things get intimate. ... I'm everyone's type." - Ward. I love that Ward pegged May as the most dangerous. She is going to be so pissed off when she learns the truth. I probably would have been eye rolling at that last line if he'd said it in any previous episode but here and how he said it - I bought it.
