IRIS Episode 16 Review

• I really liked the scene where Sun Hwa confessed to Hyun Joon that she’d known that Seung Hee was alive for a long time. I loved that when she didn’t answer why she did it he figured out on his own and he clearly felt sympathetic. I loved him pulling her against him and holding her.
• Why didn’t Hyun Joon keep shooting at Vic? It doesn’t make sense that he would take two shots (hitting him once) and then just stop shooting in order to run closer. If he was close enough to hit him the first time then he didn’t need to run forward, or he could have kept shooting as he ran. It wasn’t like anyone was shooting at him nor was there anything between him and Vic. That was just really poorly shot on the part of the director.
• “Because of the trouble you have caused I don’t have any emotion left in me to spend. If you keep on going like this I can’t protect you any longer.” – Baek San
“I never wanted you to protect me.” – Seung Hee
I keep saying it but honestly I am never going to believe Baek San isn’t her father. At least unless they give us a really good reason as to why he is so interested and protective of her. And I really, really want to show to give us an answer, even if it doesn’t coincide with my pet theory, because this mystery is actually the one I am most interested in having answered. If he is her father – I’m not sure if she knows or not. I think I could see either way though if she did know it would have to be a situation where they are estranged. I think my personal canon here is that he had an affair and Seung Hee is the result and that he truly does love her. I’m not sure if she knew growing up and was resentful or him, or just learned the truth when she started working for him and thus there is a distance between them.
• Seung Hee is great – I loved her ordering the blocking of the signal and thus saving the day (temporarily) and that she immediately left for the centre of danger. I wonder if she’ll end up being the one to diffuse the bomb (she was looking at the plans)?
• “Even if Hyun Joon forgives you I can never forgive you.” – Seung Hee. Ouch. I do think her running to see Sa Woo when he was being lead away, and the expression on her face said something different. She may not love him but she cares about him a lot and his ‘emotional rant’ did get to her.
• You know, the thing that bugs me the most of this whole thing is how Sa Woo made this decision to kill his best friend in order to spare Seung Hee having to do it and it’s never brought up that, um, Seung Hee can make her own choices and she could and would have chosen not to kill Hyun Joon. It’s not like there was any way that she could have been forced to do it! Sa Woo ‘saving’ her from this really irritates me. It was so stupid.
• The office scene between Sa Woo and Baek San was actually really interesting because for the first time I actually found myself wondering for a moment if we were going to get a huge twist end and find that IRIS have been the good guys all along. Then I considered all they’ve done and that is a lot of murder, too much to be called the ‘good guys’, I think. But Sa Woo’s “It can’t end like this”, his willingness to go down fighting for whatever they’re fighting for, as well as Baek San telling Sa Woo that “we can only trust headquarters and follow their orders”, telling Sa Woo to keep the collateral damage down and the fact that they surrendered like they did have all conspired to convince me that at the least they truly do think that they are doing the right thing, as opposed to having down everything for power or money. Though, of course, I could be wrong.
• I liked Hyun Joon’s total recall memory coming into play again. It was shown at the beginning in a throw away kind of manner and then kind of disappeared for most of the series so it was nice to see it actually becoming an important plot point here at the end.
