"Beginning of the End

I really enjoyed it. It was a very fun episode.

My Don't Like

• My biggest issue was Fury directing Coulson to re-create SHIELD and naming him director. Now I love the idea of the team re-creating SHIELD. I'm all for that and I think it's going to be great to watch. My problem is that Fury has put it entirely on Coulson's shoulders - why? While I like Coulson I don't think he would be good as the head of SHIELD. I found myself thinking during his final scene with Fury that if anyone on this show is a Mary Sue it's definitely Coulson.

The original SHIELD was created by three people - Peggy Carter, Howard Stark and Colonel Chester Philips. The recreation of SHIELD should similarly rest on more than one person. So Fury, Coulson and Maria working together would make the most sense. Coulson could still be the 'head' in the new base, Maria could keep working from Stark Industries (or not) and Fury could remain out in the world doing his thing (with scenes of Coulson talking to him on the phone so SLJ isn't needed all the time).

"No one else I'd trust with this." - Fury. Well, there is Maria. Who is probably the person he trusts most in the world. Just saying. I want Maria on the show so much but if they make her Coulson's second in command I'm going to be very annoyed.

What I Liked

• I loved Simmons monologue on life and death. It was beautiful.

• In fact all the FitzSimmons scenes were great. I loved that they saved themselves. I loved their tearful last moments. I even loved Fitz confessing his feels and sacrificing himself for Simmons. I loved Simmons dragging him to the surface. I really hope he's okay.

• Fury rescuing FitzSimmons was awesome. Great moment. Of course he'd be monitoring to the old SHIELD channels.

• Loved May kicking ass all over the episode. The May/Ward fight was excellent. I loved them using the various tools laying around and throwing each other through walls.

"Sir. I bring the noise and the fun wherever I go." - Trip. ♥ I was pretty worried that he was going to be killed off. So glad that he's sticking around as part of the team.

• So much love for the Skye/Jemma hug. That's all I wanted - ten seconds devoted to their relief and joy at the being all right. (Still grumpy they didn't bother with the Jemma/Skye hug after Skye's own danger moment.)

• I loved that Mike got to take out Garrett. It was very satisfying. I just really wish he'd stuck around. How better to make up for the harm he did then to help take down Hydra?

• Coulson/Fury were great. All their scenes. I loved their reactions to basically everything that was happening. Deadpan, unimpressed. They were delightful. I'm definitely shipping them now.

"You didn't tell me he'd gone this crazy." - Fury
"He's really stepped it up a notch." - Coulson.
Hee.

I also loved that Coulson got to yell at Fury, and Fury understood why he needed to. There was no real anger there so I guess he let most of that out on Melinda or via time and distance from learning the truth and now knowing it was his recommendation.

• Garrett saving himself only to have his villain monologue cut short by Coulson blowing him up and then casually wandering out was hilarious. A+, show.

• Koenig is back! I'm assuming LMD? Billy instead of Eric but there doesn't seem to be much difference. I was so happy to see him again.

• I liked the opening and the 'incentives' program was a great twist.

• I loved Coulson expression when Fury tells him May said he was fine "aren't you?" Not entirely sure and the end shows he has right to be uncertain. What is it that he and Garrett writing? An equation, alien language, co-ordinates?

• I loved the final shot of the current team - Trip, Coulson, May, Skye and Jemma.

Other

"You and I aren't that different." - Ward. Wow. He is really reaching now because they really are. Actions define a person not their birth. She could be a disguised swamp monster and they would still be nothing alike.

• I've noticed over the last couple episodes that Ward is kind of a sexist douchebag. His line to Maria, his threatening 'maybe he'll take what he wants' to Skye, his comment to Melinda ("this is familiar").

• So, uh, where exactly did all those people that Fury had with him come from? So much for heading off on his own.
