Finally got around to watching Thor 2 and I enjoyed it! This surprises me because spoilers and other people’s reactions left me deeply unexcited about it (which is why it took me so long to see it) and while there were certainly things about it I didn’t like there were more things I did.

Liked

+ Thor/Loki. They were fabulous. Bickering! The ‘flying the ship’ scene was hilarious. Also they have never felt more like siblings then in that scene. “Shut up, Loki!” Loki needling Thor over his flying abilities, his plan, basically being an annoying peanut gallery to Thor’s escape attempt. Heartfelt discussions! Their small moment of bonding over Frigga was a great little one. Loki’s needling about Jane was also honest -their life spans are significantly different and it will hurt Thor.

+ Loki was actually kind to Thor. During his last words to Thor when he ‘died’ – he could have been cruel then. He could have lashed out, he could have blamed Thor some more, he could have ‘died’ telling Thor he never forgave him and hated him. Instead he apologises. He gave Thor his brother ‘back’. Then as ‘Odin’ he sent Thor away having his father’s support and love when he could have easily banished Thor (again), told him he was disappointed in him. Also - Loki protected Jane twice – once by covering her when Thor tried to destroy the Aether then by pushing her out of the way of the black hole bombs (which would have lead to his death if Thor hadn’t saved him.)

+ We get multiple instances, I think, of sincere and honest emotion from Loki: his reaction when Frigga asks if she is not his mother; his reaction to Frigga’s death and how he and his cell looked like when Thor showed up to ask for his help (he did not handle it well); his expression and telling Thor ”Trust my rage” which seemed more for Loki himself than to Thor…

+ I love that Thor saw through Loki’s illusion here after falling for it several times before in previous movies.

+ I love that Jane was all about science just like in the first movie. Okay, sure, Thor too. But mostly science with a side of Thor. I loved her joy and awe at basically everything. And her surprising Asgardian’s with her smarts. And, in basically a day, turning Eric’s devices from detecting anomalies to being able to cause and control them. She seriously needs to go hang out with Tony and Bruce.

+ Malekith being defeated with a combination of Thor’s power and Jane’s knowledge. Basically Jane defeated him with science and Thor’s strength and it was great.

+ Frigga was awesome. I loved her scenes with Loki. I loved her short moment with Odin before her death. And then she showed her awesome fighting abilities and her forethought (in taking the sword and in hiding Jane away but keeping a hologram near). It’s interesting that she was sent off with a sword clasped in her hands like a warrior. It appears that Sif wasn’t the only female warrior on Asgard.

+ I love that we get Odin declaring that Loki will never see Frigga again – and the next time we see either of them it’s while Frigga is visiting Loki in his cell, lol.

+ The funeral scene was beautiful and moving.

+ Heimdall was great. I loved him taking down one of the ships not only by himself but literally by hand.

+ The Heimdall/Thor friendship was expected but lovely. I love that Thor has been hanging out with Heimdall after each battle. Also it’s clear that Heimdall totally has a favourite and it’s Thor which I also love. Bringing Thor’s human love to Asgard despite knowing Odin is against it? Treason against his king? Well fine, but only for you Thor!

+ The Malekith/Thor fight through various realms as they keep disappearing through anomalies. That was fun. Them landing on the glass roof of a building and slowly falling down the side of it was pretty amusing.

+ Eric’s glee and relief at hearing of Loki’s death. LOL.

+ Sif and Volstagg both threatening Loki.

+ I liked Richard. The interrupted date was kind of cute. He seemed sweet.

+ Darcy interrupting Jane and Thor’s reunion (almost) kiss.

Didn’t Like

+ Frigga’s death. It was well done. I love that she died fighting to protect Jane and to keep the Aether from Malekith. I love that she actually got the better of him. But I still really, really hate that TPTB killed her. Seriously, no Frigga-sleep was available?

+ Jane rushing to Thor’s side at the end. First trying to move him and then just laying down on top of him. Uh, wtf? That makes no sense to me. Yes, she was panicked, not thinking clearly, and yet I still don’t buy it. Why the hell wouldn’t she have used her machine as Eric ended up doing?

+ The implication that Jane has spent the past several years angsting/moping over Thor and that her interest in the Bifrost/anomolies is about him. Which is complete crap especially the latter point. The moping, fine whatever. But her only pursuing all this fasinating science stuff, which includes the confirmation of her theories, because of Thor? NO.

+ Odin. Wow, he was just a complete dick this movie. If this had been a fic I would have thought it OOC and blatant character bashing. Frankly Loki played a more convincing Odin.

+ Ian, Darcy’s intern. He was 100% unnecessary to the film and added nothing. He could have been removed without literally anything changing in the movie.

+ I didn’t like that Thor apparently hadn’t gone to visit Loki even once after he was imprisoned. But this is a minor thing really. He’s still deeply hurt and angry, Loki did just try and kill him multiple times and they live for thousands of years. Thor probably thought he had a lot of time. I imagine in a couple decades/centuries he would have shown up at Loki’s cell to once again try and get through to him.

Other

+ Poor Mjolnir. It just wants to be with Thor! It’s back and forth was amusing.

+ So what happened to Odin? Odin’s sleep again? I suppose that Loki could have killed him but I doubt it. And yet it also seems unlikely that he could be keeping him prisoner considering how powerful Odin is. Actually what the hell happened to Heimdall? Wouldn’t he know about the switch?

+ Frigga’s fighting style reminded me of Loki’s. Headcanon: she’s taught him to fight as well as teaching him magic.

+ Thor has pretty good control over rain if he can call it but leave a circular section dry and move it how he wants. I didn’t realise he controlled it that well.
