True Blood 4x01 Review

I'm a bit surprised but I enjoyed this episode. There was some fast-forwarding but only a little and I'm looking forward to the next episode.
• I really liked what they did with the elves.
• Responsible, dependable, even-headed Jason is kind of freaking me out. But as a serious plus I found him much more likable. Well, okay I most just liked the Sookie/Jason scenes, they are wonderful together, but I didn’t dislike him in any of his other scenes so that’s a nice step up from previous seasons.
• I liked Tara’s reaction to Sookie being alive. I liked how affected she was. But I also liked that she decided not to return to Bon Temps, even though there is no chance that that is going to last, because it was the smart decision for herself and her own well being.
• There was a lot I liked about Tara’s storyline and it’s certainly one of the ones I found most interesting. The cage fighting was a bit WTF. But I loved the girlfriend and hopefully Tara will have much better luck in her love life this season. I’m also very interested in her new attitude. The way she handled the drunk so calmly was as strange as Jason being responsible. What happened to all her anger? Is it really gone, cast off when she left Bon Temps, or has she just sublimated it into fighting and it’s still lurking under the surface? She did seem a lot more content but at the same time she’s lying about who she is which indicates to me that she’s hiding instead of having grown and moved on. Which makes me a little sad because when we last saw her leaving Bon Temps she seemed so free and hopeful but if she’s spent the past year running away it makes that moment of hope just – sad. Also physically she seemed really tired and run down. I miss the short hair she was sporting at the end of last season which I thought looked great.
• Was the surge of power in the circle when Lafayette joined it simply because Lafayette completed the circle or was it because Lafayette is full of that much innate power? I could definitely get behind Lafayette as a powerful witch.
• I liked the Pam/Jessica scene a lot. I loved Pam laughing at Jessica’s parting shot and just how amused she was throughout the entire conversation. Pam is awesome.
• Bill as King is a twist I love because it makes me so much more interested in his storyline. I didn’t dislike him once this entire episode so that was great.
• I loved the Sookie/Bill/Eric scene. Bill and Eric talking over each other amused me. I'd wondered what was going on with Eric's "apparently I have to go" but then I forgot about it. I hope we get to see how this came about and why Eric would pledge his loyalty to Bill.
• "But understand this: everyone who claims to love you - your friends, your brother, even Bill Compton - they all gave up on you. I. Never. Did." - Eric I loved this.
• “And if I owned the house, well then, I’d own you.” - Eric Uh, what? I don't think that's going to work. Because it's stupid. And Eric should know better. That's the line that irritated me the most. It... cheapens him buying the house which could have been something kind (saving something important to her) and/or sweet (a show of his complete belief in her return). I hope there's something more going on here.
• It was pretty obvious from the beginning that Eric bought Sookie’s house so that reveal didn’t surprise me at all. I liked that he was fixing it for her.
• Sam remains boring. I just find him so uninteresting. I suppose there could be some potential in his shape-shifter group. Also boring: Andy’s V addiction, Tommy and, sadly, Lafayette/Jesus (who left me very meh about them as a couple.)
• Are they really going to go the route of Arlene’s son being evil? Really?
• I really liked that Jessica and Hoyt could laugh during their fight but my love for them really must have been killed last season because they otherwise left me bored.
• “I have proof. Scientific. People are far dumber than they realise.” – Nan. LOL
• I’m very glad they did the time jump of thirteen months. That felt really needed.
ETA: What happened to Sophie Anne? There's no way Bill managed to kill her is there?
