Once Upon a Time 4x04 & 4x05 Thoughts
Oct. 28th, 2014 10:08 pm4x04 'The Apprentice'
+ Henry is the new apprentice. Does this mean that Henry is Mickey Mouse? LOL.
+ Snow and Charming being all parent-y about Emma and her date was completely adorable. Loved Snow taking pictures and David trying to be intimidating. Loved Snow being super excited and asking questions afterwards while David was all 'no details!'. I wish there were more moments like that.
+ Snow's reaction post-date made me miss season one - where Emma would have sat down with Snow and they would have chatted about the date and were friends. I miss their friendship.
+ Rumpel turning the sorcerer's apprentice into a mouse was a cute little nod. Also loved Lady and the Tramp at the fancy restaurant Hook took Emma to.
4x05 'Breaking Glass'
I enjoyed the episode though there was one big thing that really bothered me.
Emma and Regina
Oh, man, I don't even know where to start with this. I was feeling some whiplash with these two. I both hated how things played out with them and ended up liking a lot of their interactions.
+ First, I love when Emma and Regina are forced to work together and there was a lot about their team-up I enjoyed. Also I did really like the final Emma/Regina scene.
Emma: I was just looking for you to be my friend.
Regina: You thought we were friends?
Emma: Crazy right? But I thought it could be possible.
And then Regina actually stops her leaving and tells her that she doesn't want to kill her which is totally a start. I'm all for them slowly becoming friends.
That said I found some of Emma's attitude towards Regina hard to digest and before I'm going to be able to accept friends I'm really going to need the show to address a couple things.
I found Emma way, way too nice and obliging and idk, respectful. I can't think of the exact word I'm looking for here but see: "Despite everything, you've done a lot for me, Regina. So yeah you've had my back and I want you to know that I have yours." Yes it's nice to see Emma willing to let go of the past, let bygones be bygones and reaching out in friendship to her son's other mother. It's great that she's trying so hard. But it's also super freaking grating. Because yes, Regina has done so much for Emma. Like the time she caused Emma's abandonment as a baby which lead to her being raised in the foster system which in turn lead to a life of loneliness and isolation. That was awesome.
The other part of it is because of Regina's reaction to Emma's overtures. See:
"You are trying to win me over so that you can assuage your guilt for what you've done but I won't. Intentionally or not Miss Swan, you brought Marian back, you ruined my life and there is no coming back from that. Because I know you think you didn't mean to but you hurt someone. So do as I do: learn to live with it. Welcome to my world." - .... O_o What??? Are you kidding me?! I am so absolutely blown away by the tone deafness and hypocrisy of this little rant/speech. Just - WTF? Does Regina even listen to the words she says? Okay, fine, it's Regina. Of course not.
But is Emma? Because why the hell is Emma trying so hard to reach out and why is she just accepting Regina lashing out at her over and over. It was very frustrating because if there is one person who has no room to judge Emma it is Regina. Hell, Emma should have a lifetime pass where Regina will never be allowed to hold a grudge against her.
Because, again, here's the thing - that 'everything' Emma was so willing to brush under the rug includes the fact that Regina ruined her life. Self-absorbed drama queen Regina throws out at Emma that she ruined Regina's life by bringing Marian back but let's be real: one person is going to win a life-ruining prize here and it's not Regina. Okay, actually 'ruined' is probably a bit much for even Emma considering how she's managed to create a nice life for herself at this point. But the point stands: shut up Regina.
So yeah, I really, really want the show to have Emma actually bring up some of that 'everything' Regina has done to her. I need the show to not try and brush that under the rug. And I really need the show to stop having Regina lashing out at Emma for 'ruining her life' and Emma just taking it.

+ One of the things I love most about this show is that there are so many female characters, characters that are very three dimensional and who have relationships with each other. That we can get a scene where three female heroes/anti-heroes face down a female villain with nary a guy in sight. I love that.
+ The show fooled me because I was so sure that the Snow Queen was going to turn out to be Lily and, honestly, I was so there. I'm kind of sad that it isn't true because I found myself shipping Emma/Lily. The way they seemed to immediately connect, the intensity so quickly, the way things ended between them. When the Snow Queen was telling Sydney that she wanted the mirror to 'get what has been denied to her' and 'what she deserved' my mind immediately went to Emma and the way SQ said her name, the way she's been following her and added to my Emma/Snow Queen sort-of shipping it just all came together.
... except that the Snow Queen apparently isn't Lily. So - no go. Sad. Instead it looks like they are going to go a family route with them (not that I thought for a second they were going someplace romantic with Emma/Snow Queen, just that if done a certain way I would have shipped it so hard.) So the Snow Queen was a foster mother to Emma, and they become close or she became attached and she thinks of Emma as her daughter? Something like that? Exactly the opposite if that's the case from what I was hoping for.
+ So if Lily isn't the Snow Queen who is she? I feel like she has to be someone.
+ I enjoyed the flashbacks because we've been missing a large chunk of Emma's life and I liked getting to see more of it. That said, the show trying to tie the Lily situation in with Emma's relationship with Regina didn't work at all.
+ The Snow/Will scene was pretty adorable. As were Snow/Charming. That said I feel like the show doesn't really know what to do with Snow this season.
+ Another episode that made me miss Red. It's too bad that the actress didn't come back to Once after her Intelligence was cancelled. I wonder why?
+ Sydney turning on Regina was a very well deserved moment and I loved him calling her on her hypocrisy. I also loved that he betrayed her and got away with it.
