In the Forest of the Night
This was a weird episode. I actually really love the idea behind the episode - the Earth is suddenly entirely covered in trees and it's revealed that they're actually there as a shield to protect the Earth from a giant solar flare, that they've always protected the Earth from danger - but the execution was lacking for me. Overall, meh.
• The Doctor was weirdly pessimistic and willing to give up even though the solution to everything was so freaking obvious. Doctor Idiot, indeed.
• Clara was weirdly nonchalant about the kids safety at the beginning.
• "They just want their mom and dads. They're never going to stop wanting them." ...??? That's not really a great reason to let them die. WTF kind of logic is that? And why would the Doctor just accept that? People, including children, lose their parents and other loved ones all the time but that's a part of life.
- Beyond being just really dumb I find it so hard to believe that the Doctor or Clara would give up like that. That is just really out of character.
• The fact that the forest had a male voice bothered me. It's dumb but I feel like it should have been female.
• The government deciding the best plan to deal with the trees is to burn them is beyond stupid. It's a forest, that's everywhere, a controlled burn is just not possible. The chances of it getting out of control would be so high.
• Danny took the fact that Clara has been lying to him really well. I was expecting more drama. What was the point of all the lying?
• What was up with the Annabelle reveal at the end? Why did the trees take her /hide her? I feel like I missed something.
That was all really negative and I didn't actually hate the episode. I just found it really disappointing and off. There were a couple things I did like:
• As I said at the beginning I really love the concept of the episode.
• Clara/Danny were sweet.
• The Doctor with the kids was fun. His reaction when Maebh stated that she knew her mom was worried even without a phone made me laugh.
• Even though I found Clara deciding that they should all die with the planet completely stupid and inexplicable I did love that scene between Clara and the Doctor. Her revealing that she lied so that he'd return to the TARDIS, her line about humanity saving him this time, her telling him that she didn't want to be the last of her species ... it was a really lovely little scene.
• I loved the scene of the Doctor explaining everything at the end while everyone sat on the steps staring at him blankly. Heh.
