Dal Ja's Spring Episode 8 Review
Dec. 22nd, 2010 09:30 pmThis episode went in a different direction then I was expecting and had a different tone from what we’ve seen previously.
• “You’re just a man who works for me and gets paid. Got it?” – Jal Da Yikes. Ouch. I really felt for Tae Bong there. And then to add salt to the wound there’s Ki Joong, hearing everything.
• I really love the Dal Ja/Sae Do friendship. The scene where he begs her to pretend to be his girlfriend made me laugh. I liked Dal Ja going ‘hell no’ (well, figuratively), and the cut to Sae Do asking Seon Joo and her calm “No. No. No” every time he asked, and I liked that Sae Do got Dal Ja to agree by... bribing her with food. Heh.
• “Other than men there’s nothing else you lack.” – Unni. Huh. That’s actually really nice.
• So the random girl that Tae Bong was sending money to – Hee Yeon – I thought would be his sister but it appears not. A childhood friend? It seems he promised her parents that he would take care of her so maybe they were engaged to each other as children and he’s rejected that but still wants to take care of her? Perhaps she’s going to be another obstacle for the second half (perhaps his mother pushing his towards Hee Yeon since she seems to already dislike Dal Ja a lot.)
• I have to wonder if or how the show is going to continue with Dal Ja/Ki Joong after this episode. It seems clear now that while Ki Joong likes Dal Ja, she likes Tae Bong, and she has now at least semi-acknowledged that. I never thought for a moment that Dal Ja would choose Ki Joong but when she left his apartment after their date without saying a word to him – well that seems to be speak louder than anything she could have said. I mean, her leaving like that was so very rude but it also a clear statement that she isn’t interested in being with Ki Joong. Are we going to have her be in denial or refusing to let go of her dream of being with her ‘perfect guy’ and Ki Joong as that guy?
• “The only thing connecting you and me is the phone. So if you don’t answer my calls, I don’t know what else to do. ... I don’t even know where I can go to find you. Even if I’m curious I can’t go looking for you. (pause) I missed you, jerk!” – Dal Ja. Hmm, very true. I loved this moment. What I find interesting is that neither of them considered the idea that Dal Ja missing him could have to do with friendship instead of romance. I mean for the past month he has been there for her at all times – he helps her when she needs it (bringing her clothes, food etc), he listens to her and gives her good advice, he gives her comfort, he supports her – basically he’s become her best friend in a lot of ways. Of course him suddenly disappearing from her life, especially when she’s in the middle of a crisis, is going to be something noticeable, and of course she’s going to miss him. But that doesn’t have to mean romantically. She could just want her new best friend back. But neither of them went there and it surprises me because it seems the obvious road to take with them.
• Their first kiss being because she forced him into it with their contract – hmm. I found that scene strange. What was going through Dal Ja’s mind then? Why was she pushing him like that especially to that extent? Clearly because she missed him but it was about something, or several something’s, else. Did she want to prove that he missed/cared for her too?
• “It’s over, the contract. For the next month, will you be my girlfriend?” – Tae Bong. I was not expecting that! I love this turn in the story. I was actually really wondering how they were going to drag the story out for another 14 episodes. I liked the changes that Tae Bong made – minor affection allowed and if they end up having feelings they can start dating for real.
