The Doctor in the Photo

I found this to be a difficult episode to watch. It kept hitting my embarrassment squick over and over. I kept having to fast-forward through scenes and thus missed quite a bit. It was not fun for me to watch Brennan completely lose her objectivity and spend the entire episode unravelling and basically acting like a crazy person. That said this was an interesting look at Brennan and an unusual and unexpected way to play the Brennan/Booth UST relationship. I was not expecting this turn.

• I wish that the show had built up to this a little more obviously over the last couple episodes. Or maybe it did and if I re-watch the entire season thus far Brennan’s path to this point will be obvious. But because I haven’t watched them back to back just having the opening scene to show Brennan’s loneliness and her unhappiness about being alone and her fear about it wasn’t enough of a build-up for Brennan’s over-identification with the victim. I mean she glomped onto her pretty much immediately and it made me go ‘um, wait’. It felt pretty out of character at the beginning and her obsession was too quick.

• I loved the guest star, who I know best as Keith Mars and that guy on Flashpoint, and who played security guard Marty. I find the actor enjoyable to watch which is good because Brennan’s sudden long time friendship and understanding with him could have been really irritating otherwise. In fact everything about him – the fact that Brennan’s known him for nine years, that they’re friends even though we’ve never met him, that he knows her and she feels completely comfortable around him, that he makes her cookies and sends her home, and makes her smile – all of it practically screams Mary Sue. With an actor I like less he could have ended up very annoying. As it is I’m really hoping we see him again because if it is just a one off appearance it will annoy me more because his sudden appearance in her life is a bit hard to swallow. I mean there’s this:

“How come I understand every word you say, always? I don’t have that with anyone else. Sometimes I just hear noise.” – Brennan

That was too much. Giving Brennan such an open, easy and comfortable relationship with some random person, which is what he is for all the background TPTB tried to throw on him, felt... cheap. It was unearned. For that it would have been nice if he’d been someone with a connection to Brennan that we’ve actually seen. Otherwise he’s a plot device and that is not good.

The other thing of note about this sentence is Brennan’s assertion that ‘sometimes I just hear noise’ and the fact that she seemed honestly sincere about it. My first thought was of Charlie Brown and how adults are portrayed in it. I find it interesting.

• I found myself wondering several times if Marty wasn’t just a figment of her imagination. In fact as we were heading into the final minutes of the episode I was so sure that it was going to be revealed that either Marty was her subconscious and/or it would turn out that he’d died recently (perhaps the night they found the victim).

“Over and over again I’ve proven to you that I am good at what I do. So, please, explain to me how is it rational in any way for you to disregard what I said?” – Sweets. Hmm, good point. I really liked him standing up to her about this.

“Dr. Brennan I consider you one of my closest friends.” – Sweets. That made me awww. Though also I have to go ‘duh’ because Sweets loves Brennan (non-romantically), and he has for a long time, and it’s been obvious.

“You’re not alone in this world.” – Sweets. Thank you! That’s exactly what I was thinking from the beginning. Brennan’s friends aren’t just her co-workers they’re her family. If she disappeared they would try to find her and would never give up. Plus even though they’ve seemingly disappeared she does in fact have a father and brother (and nieces) who love her a lot. I wish that the show had actually gone further into this. Brennan does have family – both blood related and not – and I want her to know that.

• I actually find this turn in the Brennan/Booth relationship and the fact that TPTB have chosen to handle it in this way fascinating. I wasn’t sure at first but the more I think about it the more I like it. I liked how it played out. I liked that she didn’t explicitly say ‘I want to give us a romantic chance’ (“I don’t want to have any regrets.”) but that he knew what she meant. I liked his long pause before replying. I liked his response – “Bones. Hannah’s not a consolation prize. I love her. ... The last thing I want to do is hurt you but those are the facts.” – and that he didn’t just throw his relationship with Hannah under the bus. (Now if only Hannah isn’t killed off or otherwise gotten rid of this season.) I really liked Brennan’s crying – at first it really took me aback because it felt very un-Brennan but the way it happened with Booth rejecting her because he loves someone else and the way that Brennan just curls into herself and breaks down felt very genuine. I also really liked this:

Brennan: I understand. I missed my chance. My entire world turned upside down. I can adjust.
Booth: Do you want me to call someone to be with you?
Brennan: No, I’m fine alone.

Oh, Brennan. God, I felt so sad and sorry for her. Also for Booth who finally has Brennan saying she wants to be with him, after years of loving her and even though he undoubtedly is still in love with her, he’s with someone else now. The whole situation is just sad.

“Three days for the world to turn right side up again.” – Brennan. Now the question I have is if the PTB are actually going to brave enough to continue in this direction and have Brennan move on as well, and Brennan/Booth never happen? I’m pretty sure the answer is no.

• I knew that the doctor in the photo would turn out to look nothing like Brennan at the end.

• Crack Idea: What if the person in the tree roots actually was Brennan? That could make an awesome fic or, if the show changed its genre, an awesome episode.
