On balance there was a lot more I disliked about this episode - including a number of things I hated - then liked and yet weirdly I didn't dislike the episode while watching. I was mostly just irritated. Overall it was disappointing. The ending does have me interested in next season but, god, they need to fix what they have done to these characters and their relationships.
• I honestly thought this episode would involve Audrey, Nathan and Duke finally coming together to defeat Mara. I'm sad that didn't happen.
• The most disappointing, and aggravating, part of the season for me was the lack of Duke/Audrey. No, not even just a lack but an almost dismantling of their relationship. That was continued this episode and it's just so frustrating. The worst moment of the episode, and a perfect encapsulation of what the show has done with them this season, was at the end when Audrey was saved and ran to hug Nathan - and completely ignored Duke! WTF?? That is so wrong. That is not Audrey. And it wasn't just for a couple seconds and then things went to shit, it just went on and on until Duke literally had to say <>I"What about me?!" And even then she didn't go to him! Arg. So wrong.
• The resolution to the Mara situation felt like a cop out and a let down. Since Audrey/Nathan/Duke clearly wasn't happening I was expecting then to get the Audrey/Mara confrontation I've also been waiting for - nope. Instead that final Mara/Audrey/Charlotte scene rapidly turned into a Mara/Charlotte confrontation with Audrey knock out and having no more role in what happened. WTF?! She's the heroine! And Mara's the villain and they're also kind of the same people! I think the show really missed the boat on this by making it Charlotte talking down Mara. I mean Audrey's whole deal is her talking down Troubled people. It should have beem Audrey defeating Mara. But in a season where the writers seem determind to remove Audrey's agency I guess this fits.
• Audrey taking such a backseat during that first scene with Charlotte was so bizarre.
This is Audrey's origins! This has been what she has been looking for! And yet that weird passivity that she's been exhibiting all season was in full effect.
• Nathan irritated me a lot. His immeadiate 'I don't care' when Audrey wondered what Charlotte thought of her was annoyingly self-absorbed. It's not about you, ass! Sure, he asked if Audrey cared after a pause but frankly that should have been the first thing he said. Then there was his reaction to Charlotte's plan where he apparently thought it was his choice to make. This was a definite call back to the barn finale and Nathan interferring then and this time choosing to let Audrey make her own damn decisions for herself - and yet he annoyed me more here.
• Audrey basically asking Nathan's permission to do Charlotte's plan pissed me off. It's not his place to 'let' her do anything!
• "She's sick because one lifeforce went into two." - Charlotte. But then wouldn't Mara be sick as well?
• Kind of annoyed that we don't get to see Duke's reaction to Charlotte's plan for Audrey and Mara.
• I was annoyed when Duke heared Audrey talking to Charlotte and instead of going to her and them working on the situation together like they should have he immediate left.
• How does what happened here with Audrey and Mara tie back to the vision of their deaths that Troubled guy had? It doesn't really seem to fit.
• So what was the point of the Charlotte/Dwight subplot than?
Things I liked:
• "Because it's what I want to do. Me. Audrey Parker." - Audrey. I loved this. Audrey choosing to sacrifice herself to save the town, just like she always does. Because regardless of what her name is she is a protector.
• Duke deciding first to go out into the ocean so when he exploded he wouldn't bring harm to others and then when that wouldn't work deciding to go through the thinny, into potential unknown horrors, in order to prevent himself from giving anyone else a Trouble. Because that's who Duke is, even if he deny's it - a hero. Someone who is selfless
• I loved Audrey figuring out the link in the troubles and then talking the dad into getting control of it even though she was in a rush.
• Audrey getting in Mara's face, sort of, and then catching her fist when Mara swung at her was great. For a second she was showing some life and old!Audrey.
• Aww, Gloria helping Duke sneak into the hospital was great. I also loved her reluctance to tell Nathan about seeing him. Their friendship is wonderful.
• "I don't want to lose you too Duke." - Nathan. Nice moment.
• I actually liked Charlotte's reasoning for why she chose to make Audrey the dominant personality when she recombined Audrey and Mara. Her realising that by trying to rescue and help Mara she's only been torturing her was sad and it worked for me.
