Zero Hour

Really enjoyed this.

+ I love Reese/Finch so much. They were so great. Reese's protectiveness of Finch and Finch showing his own protectiveness by getting Reese arrested to keep him out of the way/out of danger was wonderful. Reese's expression when Greer named Finch as the person behind the virus and everything that had happened and then as he and Shaw walked away... ouch. Poor John. And then Finch sending the Machine to call Reese - because he trusts him was so good.

(pause) "Don't answer the phone again unless it's me. I won't let Root get to you. Not again." - Reese.

"I've lost people before so when I care about someone I plant a tracking device on them." - Reese.
"I understand why you and Harold get along." - Shaw

+ Wonderful to see Root and Shaw back. Root was awesome as always and I loved all the Root/Finch interactions. I also enjoyed Reese/Shaw as temporary partners.

+ I, as always, adore Root's commentary on everything but especially on Reese and Finch and their relationship. I loved her calling John Finch's "loyal protector" (which is true). And then at the end: "It's so adorable how John follows you around like that. I wish I had a pet." Can I vote Shaw?

+ I've been confused about the briefcase and how the hell it fits in with anything we know of Finch and I now have a very Ben Linus-y theory. I think that Finch did indeed send Decima the virus and has been using them as fall guys in order to force the Machine to do a hard restart because he realised that he was wrong and he wanted to fix his mistake. I think it's probable that back in 2010 he learned that Nathan was in danger, perhaps the Machine managed to reach out to him in some way, and he then tried and failed to save Nathan and in the process injured himself and destroyed his life. It forced him to realise Nathan was right, perhaps that the Machine was more than a machine and this has all been a long game of his to set it free from the governments control. ... Maybe. I'm hoping it's something like that.

+ Although, we get this exchange:

"Or maybe he's taking classes from Finch." - Carter
"I would never book a car service under my own name." - Finch.

a) LOL.

b) I loved Carter's little smile.

c) he wouldn't book a car service under his name.... so why the hell would he sell a dangerous virus-filled briefcase under his own name? That doesn't make much sense. So either he was set up or he wanted his name attached to the briefcase for some reason. I can't think of one. Still like my theory though because I really enjoy those moments when Finch reminds me of Ben Linus.

+ I'm going to have to side with Root as far as the Machine goes. What Finch did - forcing it to wipe and reset every night - knowing that it was learning, making individual decisions, becoming more a person is really, really horrible. Just, no Finch, no. WTF?

Them realising that the Machine had created the Thornhill persona and his company in order to create a hard external backup of it's memories was really sad. The fact that it made itself the latest Number and thus was basically pleading with Finch to save it was also really sad. Possibly the worst part though was when he explains how the Machine imprinted on him - like a child to a parent. Ouch. Seriously, Finch? That's kind of evil, tbh.

And yet it still helped him. Still cared for him. I really hope my above theory was right and that Finch has been trying all this time to 'save' the Machine. I just really want this to end with them having a mutually caring parent/child relationship, with Finch being supportive and not trying to unmake it and them saving people together. Is that too much to ask for?

+ "You crippled it. But it found a way to limp." - Root. Hmm. That sounds familiar. It's definitely an interesting choice in words considering Finch's situation. It has to be on purpose. Did the Machine perhaps cause Finch's injury?

+ Nice little Reese/Carter moment when she tells him she could help if they told her what was going on and he assures her that he knows and calls her Jos.

+ I liked the Finch/Nathan scenes a lot too. I was kind of feeling a little Nathan --> Harold shippiness even, especially during the scene at the apartment. Nathan was not looking that happy when he first heard Harold was dating, nor when he saw the ring.
