Awesome! There was nothing I didn't love about this episode. It gave me everything I wanted.
• I am so, so happy how everything with regards to Finch and the Machine played out. I was wrong about basically all the details but right about the overarching plot. Nathan died, that plus Finch realising that the government killed him to keep him from talking, lead to Finch deciding that he had to free it. The virus was all part of a long-term plan in his effort to free the Machine. From the very beginning of the series that has been Finch's goal. ♥
• So much love for the fact that Finch gave the Machine the tools to save itself. And then it did.
• Reese/Finch were perfect.
+ "Give me a location on Finch. You know almost everything that's happening and you won't tell me the one thing I need?" - Reese. Aww, John 'needs' Finch. He needs him safe and back at his side.
+ "If Finch had something to do with the virus I'm sure he had his reasons." Reese's complete and unwavering belief in Finch - just, damn. I love it so much. Apparently when Reese gives his loyalty he gives it permanently.
+ Upon talking to Finch for the first time since this begin and seeing him for the first time since he basically ran away from Reese with Root the first thing John has to say is - "Harold, are you okay?" ♥ He doesn't demand answers once. He ascertains that Finch is physically okay and then asks if this is what he wanted. He's all about taking care of Finch.
+ "I didn't want to involve you in this business, Mr. Reese because I had hoped that if I hadn't returned you would continue what we had started." - Finch. ♥ I loved John's expression while Finch was laying out what he did and then during this sentence. He is just so impressed and amazed by Finch. I was wrong about Finch keeping Reese out of the loop to protect him and I'm actually glad because this is so much better. Of course it's because of Finch's desire for Reese to carry on 'their' business.
+ Finch and Reese's last scene was so nice. Finch's apology - "I always worried that events that I had set in motion may have changed things for you." which Reese seemed honestly moved by and Reese absolving him of blame by stating that it was his choice not to reach out to Jessica at the airport and Finch had nothing to do with that. And then empathising with the choice he made. I love the way he takes care of Finch in all ways and Finch doing the same in his own way.
• I really loved the scene after they found the empty reactor.
- The Root/Finch confrontation
- the reveal that Finch freed the Machine
- Shaw shooting Root in the shoulder and saving Finch (and as promised it wasn't in her knee, I'm very glad it wasn't in her head/chest. Perhaps her taking Reese's whole 'we're the good guys' to heart?)
- Finch taking Root with them when they left because the government would kill her and the gentle way he put her jacket on her and helped her up
- Shaw's "You should have killed me better Hersh."
- Reese and Shaw as Finch's 'guard dogs'
- the conversation between the special counsel and Finch especially "I always knew there was someone behind Ingram. Like a black hole, invisible but powerful."
- Finch's "we're leaving"
• Finch/Root were wonderful. I just really love how cheerful she always is. I loved her protectiveness of Finch ("Don't you touch him!"). I love her basically ignoring... his everything in order to create this idea of them as co-conspirators together and the only people who understand the Machine. I kind of want that to happen for real.
+ "I believed you. I believed in you." - Root to Finch. I hope this doesn't change their relationship (on Root's side at least) too much because I do so enjoy them. I mean Finch did exactly what she wanted! He set the Machine free. I actually felt really sorry for Root here especially when she was pleading with the Machine to talk to her.
• LOL to Root's "Such a tragedy" re: Alicia and Finch's expression.
• Shaw/Reese were wonderful and surprisingly fun. I loved them randomly driving around town saving people and Reese showing Shaw the ways of 'the good guys'. They are so similar but worked off each other so well. I loved them grabbing the guns from the first number and John's "congratulations" at the second. I loved Shaw's perceptiveness in knowing that Jessica was someone Reese had loved and her asking about it.
• I loved Shaw. A list of love: her skepticism but willingness to go along with Reese, her going along with saving random people without a complaint, that her first question when entering the library was to ask after Bear, her having Reese's back so completely, her thinking to search the briefcase which leads them to the reactor, this scene: After throwing Reese the gun: "To help you feel less inadequate while I drive this thing." LOL. That was awesome.
• I loved getting to see the Machine communicating with everyone so much more, making decisions, directing what they were doing. It pointing out the bad guys was awesome. I loved Reese semi-arguing with it.
• So Finch's glasses - do Root drop them or did Finch do it himself. I like to think it was the latter because that would mean that Finch knew about John's tracker but left it/didn't say anything about it because he knew John was just doing it out of love and that it was important for John.
• "You never trusted anyone." - Nathan. He trusts Reese! I don't think completely yet but he's almost there.
• I love that Finch was figuring out what the government was doing. I really love that in the end he decided to join Nathan at the ferry. I'm so glad that Nathan died knowing that Finch was on his side, that they were still partners. I'm so glad that Finch wasn't really responsible for Nathan's death. Also I am weirdly shipping the two of them more than I ever have.
• Finch keeping photos of all the people he didn't save in the beginning hidden away and a photo of Nathan marking the spot is just so sad to me. Oh, Harold.
• The scene where Finch decided to let Grace think he was dead was very well done. I've been a little worried about how it would play out but his reasoning here made complete sense. I mean he literally just heard two government agents say they would take care of anyone else after seeing his friend's dead body.
• I liked the special counsel's "fair enough" just before Hersh shot him.
• Carter saving Elias was excellent. Can't wait to see where this is going to go. She was great all episode - I loved how she kept her cool (Terney calling her a "good girl" deserved a least a punch to the face), I loved her cloning his phone, I loved her keeping Reese appraised of everything happening.
• It was weird not to have Fusco in the episode. Again. I didn't actually miss him all that much while watching but they could have easily added him into Carter's storyline. Have her approach him at the station after her phone call with Reese and then have him saving Elias with her. It wouldn't have taken much more time and it would have added to the Carter/Fusco partnership so much.
• Reese and Shaw's car crash/borrowing the medical helicopter scene was badass and awesome but at the same time - seriously, guys?? The three medvac guys just sitting there after a car crashes right in front of them was really dumb. Yeah, sure after people with guns crawl out of the wreckage I could see them freezing in shock but for those first seconds their first reaction should have been to help.
• Oh, and okay if I had a complaint I guess Root and Finch's escape after the government killed Lawrence didn't seem very well done. Hersh ordering Lawrence killed first instead of Root didn't make much sense to me. She's the obvious threat whereas Lawrence could be dealt with at any time. The fact that the sniper missed Root with the second shot despite the fact that she wasn't moving (and considering how perfect his first shot was) seems a bit convenient. Then we seem him get ready for a third shot - and he apparently misses that as well. Finch can't move very quickly so how did they get away from the sniper? Then there are the two agents who Root took out after - why did they take so long to shoot? That whole sequence relied too much on the incompetence of the government agents.
