Episode 4 & 5
• I loved Eriko/Mami. I love their burgeoning mentor relationship. Eriko encouraging Mami (“I did it and so can you.”) and giving her the good luck charm before the play was nice. The last scene between them with Eriko giving her the eye compress and instructions to pass it on to another hurt woman afterwards was a great scene. Mami’s surprise that Eriko had cried/been hurt before surprised me because of course she had but it really emphasised how Mami saw Eriko as this unwavering and perfectly unaffected boss and not as a person. This episode was about her seeing Eriko as more than that; as well as learning she could rely on Eriko and the team, and that she was a detective.
• Eriko laying into Mami on the bus after her kidnapping made me go yikes. I know she’s all about tough love but blaming Mami for her own kidnapping was a bit much. However this was made up some by Eriko owning up to her own shame and blame for it (“It took me too long to realise that you were kidnapped.” True. “I’m a failure as a boss, too.” False. She’s an awesome boss, who made a mistake. And who could probably be slightly less of a hard ass.), as well as her “I’m glad you’re safe. You did well on your own in a situation like that.” which I thought was really lovely. She might be hard on her team, and pushing them to be their best, but she also always praises them when they do well. Beyond the first ‘wtf’ reaction I really loved this scene. I loved her telling Mami to cry, and her and Nodate looking away while she does, and then Nodate giving Mami the good luck charm. It was a really nice scene.
• I really liked the Mami/Nodate scenes at the end. I like how it was pretty much all about Eriko. I liked Mami asking him about her, and Nodate showing her the picture of Eriko from the play, and I really liked how it made Mami laugh (the first time in the show) and how Nodate reacted. He flirts a lot with Mami (and Reiko, and every other woman) but it’s not a pushy flirting and he drops it when the situation calls for it.
• “It’s a Kusareen.” – Nodate. Uh huh. Sure, Nodate, whatever. Because it’s not like he created a job specifically so that she could return to Korea, a job which would make them have to interact on a daily basis. So ‘undesirable but unavoidable relationship’, whatever, liar.
• I love that Mami got to confront and arrest Tajima. I love that after everything she’d been through she got that moment.
• I loved Ippei rubbing Iwai’s shoulders after the case.
• I thought at the beginning Takuma would have a much larger role than he’s had thus far. We know he has angst, probably over shooting someone based on episode 2, but we’ve got nothing on it yet and of the guys I feel like he’s gotten the least amount of screen time.
• Eriko and Nodate are both too awesome and observant to not have noticed Keisuke hiding in the room when they had their firing conversation, so they were pretty much just messing with him weren’t they? That really amuses me though it seemed a bit mean. I mean, Keisuke is like a teddy bear.
• They made the three bullies so unlikable and horrible (they killed two people, bullied tons more, celebrated their killing of one) and Tajima’s reasons for everything were pretty understandable that Eriko’s scolding of what he did made me go ‘eh’. I can’t really feel sorry for their deaths. Now grabbing innocent Mami and then pretty much torturing her and then trying to kill her was so very wrong and not understandable in any way.
