I really enjoyed it.
+ Excellent Red/Liz episode. They got a lot of great scenes - the moment during the auction, her failed attempt to get him out of the box, her returning to save him, their final talk. It was all wonderful.
- I really love that even while being held prisoner and in the midst of being auctioned off Red is perceptive enough to realise that Liz's cover has been blown and intercedes to protect her. Because that's what Red does.
- I love that with only a shared look Liz picks up from Red that her cover has been blown and sneaks away.
- Red's last word - "Lizzie". Wow. But seriously what the hell is she to him? Because I don't think she is his daughter and yet with his emotional investment in her - his last thought before death would have been of her! - I honestly can't think of what else it could be between them.
- I was torn on the final Liz/Red scene. There was a lot I loved about it but there were a couple things that didn't work so well for me.
"I risked my life for you because I care about you. Deal with that." I loved that. Granted this seems like yet another back/forth moment with Lizzie but I think I'm getting a handle on it. She deals with Red the same way she deals with Tom. They're someone who she cares about deeply but are also both someone who has hurt her deeply and who she doesn't know if she can trust. So in the aftermath of the latest breach in trust Liz tries to shut down her emotions and lock them out. Except that doesn't really work well because she doesn't stop caring. I've been loving Liz's latest break from Red because she's kept it professional instead of passive-aggressive. I think her risking herself for Red and their emotional, on her side, confrontation makes complete sense because of the danger Red was in. It force Liz out of her attempt at distance.
The camera should have been on Red's face when Liz told him that she cared about him. We get all those long shots of Red's devastation after the many times Liz has rejected him it seems only fair that we see how he reacts when she tells him she cares.
I found Liz being so emotional and especially her crying during this seen a little - weird. Off. I didn't really understand it.
I liked Red's repeated demand that Lizzie "never do that again" because as shown again and again Red's first priority is LIZ's safety.
+ Red getting into a bidding war with Yibari over himself was hilarious. Largely because Yibari was so furious about it and Red was so unperturbed as per usual. Red was very much in control of that exchange and it was delightful to watch.
+ I liked the Liz/Tom phone call. It was really interesting. Liz was a lot calmer than I would have expected. She handled the call very calmly and - professionally. Liz wasn't emotional at all which is different from her normal interactions with him. It's like they've hit a plateau in their relationship. I'm liking it. Plus she got to be a little snarky: “I always thought you just had allergies.” LOL.
Also on Tom's side of things this episode makes it completely clear, if it wasn't before, that he does actually have honest feelings for Liz. I loved him giving her advice on being undercover. It was kind of sweet.
+ The final scene between Red and the King family was great. I loved him shooting the dad and his gleeful "Oh my god, what are the odds?" after. I loved Liz acting as his backup. I liked him having to get the last word as always.
+ I hope those neo-Nazi tattoos Tom got are temporary because if not they're really going to affect his future job prospects. I'm assuming his current job is going to tie into the person who put a 40 million bounty on Red.
+ I love that some of Red's past actions have come around to bite him in the ass now. Madeline Pratt setting him up because of Red playing her last time they met was great and I can't wait to see how their next meeting plays out. Normally I'd think she'd be dead but Red did go to the trouble to try and save her when he thought she was in trouble with no apparent ulterior motive so him having some feelings for her appears to be true. Then there's Yibari almost killing him.
+ Liz was in a difficult position during the escape attempt but I don't know that sending Vincent out running into the unknown by himself was the best choice. Sure it worked out but it easily could have not.
+ "If you think that there's a soul in this world loyal to anything but your pocket book..." I found this interesting because we know that Red has people loyal to him. We've seen that Red's actual people are loyal. Maybe not all of them are loyal under all circumstances but Dembe sure as hell is. Mr. Kaplan I'd believe is. Probably more that we haven't seen. It's shown that Liz is as well. And yet this actually seemed to get to him. At the end of the episode Liz states that he doesn't see himself as deserving of help and I think she might have hit the nail on the head and Red doesn't think he deserves saving. At the beginning of the series Red tells Lizzie that he has no friends which is pretty immediately proven patently false. But perhaps Red doesn't feel like he deserves friends/loyalty so much that he devalues their relationship to him? He's a horrible person and doesn't deserve it ergo their friendship can't really be true?
+ You'd think one of Red's allies would have shown up at the auction. That be a really great way to get onto Red's good side.
+ I really wish that the show wouldn't background Dembe so very much. I miss when he had a bigger role. Red was kidnapped and he should have working frantically to find him. It was really weird to not see him at all after the actual kidnapping. It didn't make a lot of character sense to me. Not to mention that it didn't make snese for the bad guys to leave him alive. Nor did I like how easily Red was caught.
I really enjoyed it.
