BOSS Episode 6 - 8 Thoughts
Dec. 9th, 2010 03:52 pmThe amazing thing about Eriko is that she doesn’t let her pride get in the way of anything, let alone doing her job. She lets people think what they want of her – like her male boss/other division heads thinking and basically saying that she’s incompetent, suspects thinking she’s stupid and being snide or superior towards her – and she lets people think, or even purposefully comes off as, less smart then she is. She just doesn’t care what people think of her. And then in the end she gets the bad guy/solves the crime/proves that she is in fact smarter and better than everyone else. I love that about her.
Episode 6
This was a fun episode in an intense way.
The games that Eriko and Ishihara Yuki played were very interesting and I think at the end there was a mutual respect between them. Eriko was very – gentle during the final interrogation and she seemed genuinely sad for Yuki. I was actually pretty sad for her too (though I was kind of hoping that it really was all about Saori) even with her attitude. I like the idea that Eriko and Yuki start writing each other while Yuki is in jail and Eriko ends up mentoring Yuki.
Eriko having a boyfriend, I’m assuming the guy we always see her with, is interesting since he apparently doesn’t know that she works for the police. I wonder what is up with that. With the boyfriend reveal we got the reactions of her team and two stood out to me (as they’re most important to my interests):
Nodate didn’t move or react in any way, so much so that it almost felt purposeful, and I couldn’t help but think ‘a ha, now we know why he doesn’t flirt with her’. Of course, he could just not flirt with her because she’s just a really good friend and that’s all he sees her as. I prefer to think of it as them having known each other for a long time, and he’s in love with her but knows she has a boyfriend and so keeps a very strict line drawn between how he can act around her.
The other reaction was Mami’s – she turns around and walks into the wall. It was just interesting. Is it just that she can’t believe that Eriko would have a boyfriend?
Episode 7
• I’ve found myself shipping Eriko/Mami a lot since the kidnapping duo and the beginning of this episode had a couple little moments that I really liked. I loved, for example, that Mami is just so used to following Eriko’s orders that when Eriko tells her to get undressed Mami goes ‘Eh?’ and then just does it. LOL. “I wasn’t thinking”, hmm?
• I also liked Mami’s shirt during the office scene with Eriko: “I love you but I love me more” and her “What an overbearing slave driver” mutter.
• I’ve noticed that since the kidnapping Eriko always assigns Mami to accompany her when handing out assignments. I wonder if it’s because of her kidnapping, consciously or not?
• “To me, work comes first. I use men as a spice in my enjoyment of life.” – Reiko. I kind of love that.
• I have so much respect for Eriko and how she deals with her various male boss/co-workers who keep yelling at her, and getting in her face, and basically setting her up to fail/play down her abilities. The way they talk to her pisses me off.
• “It was scary... that serious look she gave me. I just spontaneously nodded.” – Nodate. LOL. I loved him going in and basically shaming her team into helping her.
• “You and I could have been friends, right?” – Hitomi. I agree and I think that’s why Eriko was so mad about this case. She connected to Hitomi, they were very similar in both their lives and how they appeared to view life, and they got along really well. I feel like Eriko was hurt and offended even more because of that. Mami notices it as well:
“That person is just like our boss. Her only passion is for her job.” I like how Mami and Reiko keep meeting on the roof to talk (and sometimes Eriko and Reiko, or Eriko and Nodate). Eriko is certainly very passionate about her job but I’ve also kind of gotten the implication that she is also a romantic and that she could be passionate about another person. I certainly don’t get that with her boyfriend (Hiroshi?) so maybe she just needs to find the right person?
• “When I heard him talking to the boss, I think he made a pass at her.” – Ippei Wait, is he talking about Nodate and Eriko? Oh, please, I’d love to see that.
Episode 8
The Katagiri Takuma angsty back story episode and it was actually pretty good.
• I got a little teary-eyed at the end when Nanami explained that she’d been the one who called the man Takuma shot and that since then she’d been unable to move past wondering if that was why he got shot. Then she gets teary-eyed and looks as if she’s going to cry but then breathes in and gets a hold of herself and walks to the police car composed. I think it was that that really got to me.
• I loved that Takuma promising to take flowers to where he’d died ‘from now on’. I loved that Nanami was an amazing shot.
• Mami’s reaction to the package was a bit much – based on it I was expecting a severed body part not a doll with fake blood.
• Once again Mami is assigned to partner Eriko when they all split up.
• Nodate’s ‘this is the password to the Investigative Materials Database which no one under Department Chief can look at, oops, it fell from my pocket’ made me smile.
• I love when Eriko glares Nodate into submission.
• This episode gave yet more proof that Nodate loves to torment Keisuke when he tells Eriko “Yamaru’s looks best when his face is troubled.”
• I felt sad for Keisuke. He’s like this weird teddy bear and is clearly so lonely, and here he thought he’d found happiness and instead was used and got in trouble at work (it won’t end with him in front of a review board thought it probably should).
• Eriko is really good at playing the politics game as she showed in this episode. Like when she forces Ippei to stop talking and then tells him “A kid who doesn’t know anything shouldn’t try to act smart.” I wonder if he realised that she was saving him from getting into a lot of trouble? I’m thinking not but Takuma is smart enough/has enough experience that he did.
• I really hope that Commissioner Yada gets taken down before the end of the series.
• I liked everyone, minus Eriko, sitting around together for dinner and I hope that by the end we get to see Eriko joining them at least once.
• “Emotional arguments are irrelevant!” – Eriko. ♥ I love her. That was actually the loudest/most worked up we’ve ever seen her with these bosses. Also the background music was perfect.
