Episode 3

• I feel like this episode should have been a little further along in the series. When Kyohei confronted/comforted Sunako about caring more for a doll then humans who care for her, when he said “Know that we all care about you” I found myself wondering just how long had they known each other? It’s only been three episodes! In the anime this plot happened... in episode 20 and I find it more believable then. Things seem to be happening much faster in this version and I prefer a slower build.

• I thought this was a very amusing episode. Things that amused me include:

- Mari acting all scary and then instantly turning to pleading for help to ‘get closer to Kyohei’
- Kyohei thinking belly-dancing is an appropriate way to get Sunako to be a lady (seriously what exactly does ‘a lady’ mean to him?)
- Kyohei practicing the hip movements himself in the background
- Ranmaru apparently being a Kyohei/Sunako shipper with his playing up the threat to Kyohei and then his optimistic “Maybe everything went well and they are hugging and kissing?!” Oh, silly boy.
- Noi also seems to ship them “Sunako-chan is a great cook and she caught Kyohei’s stomach!” Ha. So true. I love how the guys are all nodding along in the background.

• I loved the Loli Loli actually being proactive in this series and bribing Sunako to basically set them up on blind dates with the guys. I can’t believe no one ever thought of that. I can’t believe I didn’t think of that! It was an excellent idea. Now if only they’d done something with the opportunity they’d created. I liked this take on the kidnapping so much better then where I thought it was going.

• Kyohei did have a point, sort of, when he accused Sunako “Your character has changed you know”. ‘Sort of’ in that he hasn’t known her long so I don’t that he can really say that. But agreement in that it is kind of sketchy when you think of it as ‘Sunako selling the guys out for free stuff’. However, ‘selling’ is basically just her introducing them to a girl, them saying hi and that’s it. It’s not like she’s really pimping them out.

• When Sunako was introducing Takenaga I immediately thought of Noi so it was nice to see her. I feel like I should have a problem with it but then Sunako and Noi aren’t close friends yet. Hell, at this point they’ve only interacted once that we’ve seen. So Sunako doesn’t really owe any loyalty to Noi yet. I really hope they do actually build their relationship.

• I loved Sunako hanging by a rope outside the window. It was completely creepy and so Sunako. It was a necessary change from the anime in that they couldn’t have her scale the wall but it kept the same feel as the anime and I thought it was excellent.

• I continue to enjoy TPTB having Sunako/Kyohei fighting each other all the time and I love that she kicks his ass. But, oh, the fighting on this show is so bad. I’ve been spoiled by well-choreographed fights in Western TV. Kyohei picking her up, throwing her over his shoulder and the spinning around did make me laugh. So ridiculous.

• It just occurred to me that they’ve taken the Kyohei/Sunako interactions/relationship and made Kyohei’s interactions with Shinichi basically the same. The fighting thing is framed as being the same. Hmm. I don’t know that I like that.

• I loved that Takenaga wasn’t fooled by Kyohei’s uncaring attitude.

• Yuki had a line that had me shaking my head. He says ‘you kissed her so you have to marry her’... say what? Everyone basically ignored him or thought he was being ridiculous but I can’t believe he even said it. What is he five?

• I actually really loved Mari and how her plot and characterization played out. Mari was given actual motives and sympathetic reasons for what she does. She starts as the crazy stalker, ventures out of crazy with her plot to enlist Sunako’s help not hurt her, back into crazy with kidnapping Hiroshi (though even then I was thinking of all the things that someone called a ‘crazed stalker’ could do kidnapping a doll is not very high up there) and then straight out of crazyville during her conversation with Kyohei and Takeru. She was sad and deluded, sure, but not crazy and not unsympathetic. I loved their conversation about love. I loved that she was given depth.

• Another thing I liked with Mari was the scene at the mansion. Mari practicing on the stuffed bear how she would talk to Kyohei had me feeling pretty embarrassed for her. Did she not realise that the other guys were right there? But what I liked was that they, or at least Yuki, felt bad for her instead of looking down on her or being dismissive, etc.
