Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
Jul. 31st, 2015 11:34 pmI've watched the first two seasons over the last couple weeks and have enjoyed it immensely. Excellent characters and relationships and amusing and fun.
• Phryne is awesome. I'm in love. I love her competence and her self-confidence. [She excels at both!] I love how playful and fun she is and how much she makes sure to enjoy her life. I love her compassion and desire to help people; her intelligence and cleverness, her knack for being two-steps adjacent from a murder; her unwillingness to back down; her courage; her shamelessness; her wit and humour, her acceptance/understanding of others differences and how nonjudgmental she is. I love that she is both a feminist and a feminist character. I adore the fact that more often than not she saves herself. Oh, and her fan dance was a delight.
Phryne: Well, I disturbed him and he ran off with the book. I gave chase and he took a shot at me. So I did the only thing I could in the circumstances.
Jack: You called for help?
Phryne: I stabbed him in the shoulder.
♥ [I really want her to meet Adele Blanc-Sec. I firmly believe they would get along so well and would solve so many crimes together.]
• The costuming on this show is amazing. Phryne's clothing is phenomenal. So, so pretty. So many things I want. Just, god, so gorgeous.
• I love the Phryne/Dot relationship. Phryne is basically her mentor and I love how quickly Dot goes from her maid to her trusted companion. Their devotion and love for each other, and the way they support each other is wonderful.
• Dot's character growth is the best of the series. It was so great to watch her go from the timid girl of the pilot to someone who is self-confident and brave and does things like breaking into places, acting as a decoy, going undercover and holding her boyfriend at gunpoint to free Phryne from jail.
Dot: Come on, Hugh. (pause) Collins!
Hugh: Sir. Dot.
• The biggest surprise of the series for me was how openly sexual Phryne is. In fact I can’t think of any female character who sleeps with as many people as she does. I fucking love it. She is just so uninhibited and unashamed of her own desires. She sees a hot guy that she finds attractive, and who she usual has a connection with, and so she sleeps with him. I didn’t keep track but she had to have slept with 5/6 men each season? A lot of one night stands in any case. She is completely unapologetic about it. And why shouldn't she be? She has fun, they have fun, no one is hurt. I love that in show she is never shamed for it. Some people find her scandalous as a whole but she’s never called a slut/whore/harlot, she’s never threatened or snubbed because it, it’s just never really an issue. I also love that while Phryne and Jack have an USTy will they/won’t they relationship it doesn’t stop her from sleeping with other guys and Jack never once looks down on her for it.
• Phryne/Jack are so wonderful. I liked them in the first season but it wasn’t until the second that I completely fell for them. They're just so delightful together and clearly take so much delight in each other that I can't help but love them. They have fun, respect each other, flirt like crazy, and work so well together. I think the moment that really cemented things for me was the beginning of 2x07 and Jack’s reaction when he thought Phryne had died in the car crash. I actually didn’t realise at first what was happening until Phryne showed up and then I had to rewind and watch it again. He was so heartbroken!
"Don't be remorseful it only confuses me." - Jack. Hee, and aww.
• Hugh and Hugh/Dot are very sweet. The supporting cast - including also Jane, Mr. Butler, Mac, Bert, Cec and Prudence - is great. I love so much the sense of found family that permeates the entire series. It makes me happy.
• I love the Phryne/Jane relationship. There was definitely not enough Jane in season 2. Actually after the episode with her mom she disappeared and at first I didn’t think much of it because she, like Mac, tends to miss a lot of episodes. But the longer it went on the more I found myself second guessing it. I thought that the conclusion of the mom episode merely meant that Phryne wasn’t adopting Jane like she wanted but then I found myself wondering – did Jane leave to stay with her mom? Was she gone-gone? I was so pissed off! They may not have been officially mother/daughter but Phryne considered Jane her daughter (and even called her that) and I was all ready to be super angry about the show throwing that away. And then Jane showed up in the season 2 finale back from her trip to the continent. Like had been discussed before her disappearance on the show so... yay! Really happy she’s back.
