Death Benefits

I liked it.

• This was such a great Finch/Reese episode. So much to love.

+ Their interactions at the beginning with the lighthearted banter ("I can sing for you") was nice to watch. Reese's dislike of opera amuses me.

+ "Are you there, Finch?"
"Always, Mr. Reese."

+ Reese moving in front of Finch when he saw the Decima agents; the way he put his hand behind him and touched Finch's hip as he said 'Finch get down!'.

+ The way he stuck so close to Finch at the end as they escaped into the woods.

+ "Look I've never entirely trusted your Machine, but you built it, and I trust you." - Reese.

+ Their uses of 'Harold' and 'John'.

+ The fact that in the end Reese chose to go with Finch's decision instead of what he thought they should do because he trusts Finch more.

• The scene where they try to decide what to do was great. It was a very tough choice and a difficult position they were put in with very little time to process.

- I love Shaw's character growth - she was actually torn because she likes saving people! I loved that she admitted that. I also loved that in the end her choice was to kill McCourt because she trusted the Machine.

- Reese was 100% immediately for killing McCourt which was interesting. In part because he trusted the Machine (via trusting Harold) to steer them right (if it was willing to go this far), in part because this is what he was used to doing in the past, and I wonder how much it was also about protecting Finch and everyone else in their group? At the beginning of the episode Harold states right out that they will be killed if Samaritan goes online. They're "confidants of the Machine".

- Then there was Finch. Finch with his very complicated relationship with the Machine. It kind of feels like he distrusts 'it' most of all. He keeps his distance from it (even as a part of his desires the closeness/understanding Root has) and he resists considering it as anything but a machine. He knows exactly how much danger he, and all those he cares about will be in, he knows how the Machine works and yet he refuses to compromise his morals. [And yet he was able in the past to accept the deaths that the Relevant numbers lead to. Because he told himself they were necessary and the targets were terrorists? Yeah, and because they happened while tucked away from his sight/knowledge. I loved Reese's pointed 'what do you think we did?'] Oh, Finch. Sometimes there is no other way, no better option. This is going to blow up in his face so bad and I really hope it doesn't get someone killed. Thou I assume he disappeared at the end to protect the others.

• I liked the Shaw/Root scenes. They're so fun together. Root showing up on the bike and luring Shaw away with the promise of stealing and violence ("It does sound kind of fun") was great.

"But from who?" - Shaw. Meh. This really irritated me because Shaw is smarter than that. I mean he basically laid it all out for her!

• Reese shooting to wound/not kill annoyed me a bit. I've noticed a lot this season the whole not killing thing but has that always been how they've preceded? I feel like Reese has definitely killed people while on the job. Anyway, it's great on the one hand but it's also rather unrealistic. Maybe it's because the plot of this episode but it felt like a cop-out that Reese wasn't forced to kill any of the people trying to kill them.

• Oh, Machine, clearly this was a job for Root. Bam, this would have bee solved without a second thought. I have no idea what she was thinking. Maybe she was testing Finch (and the others) to see how far they were willing to go?

• A small thing but I love that Finch had the glass bulletproofed in the meat association building because of course he did. It's too bad that safe house has now been burned.
