Episode 1

Wow. This episode was so different from the manga and anime. I was not expecting that. I mean interpreting the story in their own way, sure, but this series appears to be taking just the basic summary idea of the series and writing based off that. I spent most of the episode not sure how I felt about it – I spent a lot of time raising my eyebrows, or going ‘uh huh’ or ‘wth’, or just generally being unsure. Plus it kept hiting my embarrassment squick.

However by the end, particularly those last couple scenes with Sunako and Kyohei, I found myself liking it. I think it had a very rocky start but when it ended I found myself wanting to watch the next episode.

• Most of the problem was that everything seemed to move too fast and I just found the pace overall weird. Plus the interactions between Sunako and the boys felt a little off. I feel like their meeting, and the boys getting to know who Sunako is, happened far too quickly. I mean they just met her and yet somehow know to leave a trail of ‘scary’ props in order to catch her? I had an issue with how some of the story was translated into real life – clearly this was not going to be an easy anime/manga translation – but a lot of what they did do came off looking very silly. Also, completely subjective I know, but I did not find Kyohei to be hot let alone the ‘omghot’ which is what the character is supposed to be. But then this is another aspect of the difficulty in translating the anime/manga to real life so I mostly just waved it off.

• The fact that Sunako got made over in the first episode was a bit weird.

• I did love the addition of Yuki as a female best friend for Sunako. Their hug after Yuki confronts Masao was great. Takeru was adorable but I’m not completely sold on his addition to the cast. Perhaps because I don’t know why he was?

• I loved Sunako and Kyohei’s simultaneous ass-kicking of the hosts – though in the tradition of Asian dramas it’s so very bad. It’s kind of endearing how bad the fighting is.

• I loved the Noi/boys scene at the school and just how comfortable they were around each other. She’s clearly an actual friend of all of theirs. I can’t wait till she meets Sunako.

• I’m pretty much on Kyohei’s side as far as Sunako’s overreacting to being told she was ugly. She's kind of a drama queen.

• I love the house in this series. So gorgeous from the outside thought the interior decorating really isn’t my style.

“I want her to have her confidence back.” – Aunt. I really loved this line. I loved it being stated right out that the whole ‘turn Sunako into a lady’ plot is about Sunako herself and helping her to overcome a self-esteem problem that has taken over her whole life. That it’s not about judging her interests and her because of them or the need to make her into some ideal girl. The aunt moving on to talking about all the stereotypical girl stuff Sunako is missing especially boys is something I’m going to ignore.

“You can push yourself for someone else. So, you are not ugly.” – Kyohei. That’s another line I really liked. And I liked their exchange of gifts. On one hand I kind of love that he (and the others) aren’t spending all their time going ‘oh no, you’re beautiful, really’ but that instead he’s ‘if you’re ugly inside it doesn’t matter what you look like’. I like that attention to who a person is over how they look. That said – Sunako is pretty! Would it kill one of them to say it once?
