iaria: (River Song - Spoilers (Doctor Who))

Overall I liked both parts.

9x03 'Under the Lake'

• I loved the Doctor worrying about the TARDIS and why she was upset at the beginning.

“So who’s in charge now? I need to know who to ignore.” - Doctor. Heh.

• Clara made the Doctor 'caring' cue cards! LOL. This amuses me so much. I do enjoy the ways that Twelve is such a failboat at normal human interactions. But he's actually using them - he is trying to be better and I love that. In the same vein I liked him trying to talk to Clara about how she was doing and encouraging her to start dating again and basically simply attempting to be a supportive friend. It was nice.

• I quite like the crew. O'Donnell's fangirling of the Doctor was fun and I liked her competence. I liked that Cass's first priority was her crew's safety. I found Lund really likable.

9x04 'Before the Flood'

"It's bigger on the inside! It's bigger on the inside!" - O'Donnell, jumping excitedly up and down. That was so adorable. I loved that whole scene and it firmly cemented her as my favourite. My first thought after she pulled herself together and followed the Doctor was to hope that she didn't die, lol.

• I think Bennett was right on point - the Doctor totally used O'Donnell as a canary - and it's kind of throwing me for a loop. I mean he could have told her what the list of names meant and given her an informed choice about staying or going but he didn't even do that. Instead he made a very tepid attempt to tell her to stay in the TARDIS while giving her no reason for it. He knew that she would immediately reject the idea of staying behind. He didn't try again. It's this that convinces me that he essentially sacrificed her life to further his understanding of the situation. I'm really annoyed and honestly mad at the Doctor for this. Nine would be so ashamed. Why did the Doctor need Clara's name next on the death list as incentive to act? Yes, the Doctor does work harder for his Companions but it's like he didn't even try for O'Donnell. She didn't have to die.

• Cass being unknowingly stalked by Moran was genuinely tense and creepy. Well done show. I also loved that she saved herself instead of being rescued by Clara like I was expecting.

"I somehow doubt the Rose or Martha or Amy lost their breakfast on the first trip." I'm so easy - any mention of past Companions makes me ridiculously happy.

"Listen to me we all have to face death eventually. So this conversation between the Doctor and Clara ended up falling a little flat for me. I think it's in large part because Clara and the Doctor have been right here before - impossible situations where the Doctor should die (Trenzalore, Christmas when he ran out of regenerations) but hadn't it. This one didn't feel significantly more dangerous.
