Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Act 21 Review
Oct. 18th, 2009 01:21 pm‘What Did You Do to Ami?’
With this episode I had no problem finding things for most of the categories. In fact I had the opposite problem – there were multiple possibilities for each one! I finally decided to do all of them instead of trying to choose just one.
Hottie Of the Week: Ami and Makoto, with Ami just beating Makoto by a dark transformation. Ami as Dark Mercury is gorgeous. The black in the new uniform just works really well as a highlight for all that blue and works so well on her.
Funniest Moment: Tie: 1) Makoto remembering punching Tuxedo Kamen, thinking that she should have hit him again and then walking off hitting the air. 2) Makoto’s first meeting with Motoki. Poor Makoto. Hee.
Cutest Moment: Tie: 1) Motoki with Makoto at the hospital, trying to make her feel better. 2) Shingo bringing Usagi a special meat bun because she’s not feeling well. Aww. 3) Makoto taking care of a sick Ami – cooking for her, playing nurse maid, going to the amusement park with a hyper Ami – it was all very aww worthy.
Saddest Moment: … Usagi being all pleased about the bun, flashing back to sharing one with Mamoru and thus becoming all sad, and then determinedly trying to push away that thought and eating the bun. I just found it sad.
WTF of the Week: Makoto deciding not to call Usagi and Rei with Ami in the hospital. Ami being sick at home I’d understand, Ami in the hospital not so much. Relatedly why was Makoto going to use a pay phone to call the girls instead of, say, her senshi cell phone? Oy.
Coolest Moment: Tie: 1) Makoto wondering aloud where Ami is and… the trees answering her! Awesome. We’ve had a similar shorter moment before but it’s been the while. Makoto was actually listening to the trees and they were clearly talking to her in a language she understood. It was very cool. 2) Dark Mercury – from Ami joining Kunzite, to her creepy smile and the transformation itself it was all very cool. 3) Sailor Jupiter versus Kunzite was pretty cool – very much more fighting then anything else we’ve seen up until this point (punching and kicking!) and she did pretty well against him!
Best Senshi Moment: Makoto – just Makoto throughout the whole episode – she was pretty awesome. I loved her punching Mamoru. I loved her caring for both Usagi and Ami. I loved her tracking Ami by tree. I loved her protectiveness of Ami and her actually catching the column and throwing it aside (I assume it’s supposed to be solid). I loved her fight against Kunzite. I also liked that she sensed the dark energy at the hospital which would seem to indicate that she is growing more powerful.
Best Senshi Interaction: Makoto/Ami. Makoto immediately leaving school when she learns that Ami isn’t there, then taking care of Ami and the two of them having fun at the amusement park (to the extent that it exhausted Makoto!). I especially loved the scene where Makoto is sitting tiredly on a bench and Ami turns up with a green balloon, smiling widely and Makoto can’t help but grin back at her. Aww. Over the last few acts we’ve been concentrating on Usagi/Mamoru and Rei/Minako while Makoto and Ami have been staying the background together but that’s a lot of weeks of bonding between them and something to keep in mind about them.
+ The Naru/Makoto scene was interesting not because it’s the first time they’ve ever had a scene together but because they didn’t seem to know each other. Or at least Naru didn’t seem to know who Makoto was. Makoto knows that Naru is Usagi’s friend but I didn’t really get the sense that Naru knew that Makoto and Usagi are friends. This in turn made me realise that in all those scenes at school it’s always been Ami with Usagi. We’ve never gotten a scene of Makoto trying to make friends with Usagi’s school friends or even a scene with Makoto and Usagi interacting there. It’s bizarre!
+ “You are scum! I won’t tell Usagi but… Never go near her again!” – Makoto, after punching him in the face! I love how protective Makoto is of Usagi. I loved this exchange.
