Burlesque and Interstellar
Oct. 23rd, 2015 11:35 pmA couple recently watched movies.
Burlesque
I actually really liked it.
+ I loved the Tess/Sean relationship. They were completely lovely.
+ Sean was great but then I always love Stanley Tucci.
+ I loved Tess as substitute mother to all her girls.
+ Her teaching Ali make-up tricks was a lovely scene and I liked her pride in her. I loved her making Ali work for her approval.
+ I liked what the movie did with Nikki – she was kind of a bitch but you could see her insecurity and self-destuctiveness, and she gets moments that show that she’s more than that. I loved the Nikki/Tess relationship and wish we could have gotten more of them.
+ I kind of ship Ali/Nikki. I loved that little moment between them at the end. I kind of shipped Ali/Marcus too.
+ Marcus is pretty hot [oh, Eric Dane you’re always McSteamy] and charming. He wasn’t skeevy or douchy at all like I was expecting. I mean him starting things with Ali when he had some sort of relationship with Nikki was a bit terrible but the fact that Nikki doesn’t bring it up/confront either of them shows that they didn’t have a serious relationship and she knew it.
+ I like that Nikki and Marcus are both antagonists but they’re not bad guys. They’re just complicated, Nikki in particular. Marcus isn’t trying to hurt Tess, he’s just doing business that he thinks is beneficial all around. He might have had more luck if he’d offered to build Tess a new club in another location if she sold to him.
+ I liked the Ali/Jack friendship. Their first scene was really adorable. The romance aspect was okay. Cute occasionally but the whole cheating aspect was very assholish. I liked Ali with Marcus or Nikki better.
+ I enjoyed the music and dance numbers too.
Interstellar
It was okay. It even made me cry a couple times [I’m so easy.]
+ I started watching on the TV but the sound mixing on this movie is terrible. This isn’t something I usually notice so when I do it’s clearly really bad. I could barely hear most of the dialogue, a lot of it I missed completely because I just couldn’t understand. I have no idea what happened here but whoever was in charge should have been fired. Halfway through I switched to watching it on my tablet with headphones and while it did make it legible I still had to strain sometimes to hear. It was very annoying.
+ Visually it was a great looking film and there were some really gorgeous visuals. I loved the look of the wormhole and the planets.
+ I was a little ‘uh, seriously’ about Joe and Murphy finally seeing each other again, talking for 5 minutes and then him leaving. The scene itself was wonderfully done and I liked everything that happened in it but I feel like there needed to be a cut to imply a bunch of time passing wherein Murphy tells him about her life and he tells her some of what space is like and they catch up.
+ I did really like Murphy sending her dad after Brand. Joe was out of place in the dying world we saw at the beginning which child Murphy understood and I think she understood too that he would be just as out of place in the new world she helped create.
+ I find Murphy really interesting – that whole bit about her not sending her father video messages while he was still in contact because she was still too upset and then it was too late and so she choose to live with that decision and continue not to send any was a great character touch.
+ I thought it was really bizarre that Joe apparently didn’t even try and get to know his grandkids or great-grandchildren (and I think great great grandchildren) and that none of them apparently tried to contact him. That is just so weird. They’re family! Plus while the rest of humanity apparently didn’t believe Murphy telling them it was his message that helped her solve the equation I’m sure that she’s told her kids the same thing often. You’d think they’d be curious. Eh, it just didn’t work for me.
+ The subplot with Tom was kind of weird and the fact that his wife almost literally has no voice was a bizarre choice. It was very much shot like Murphy rescuing her sister-in-law and nephew from her brother... was he abusive? Is that what we were supposed to get from that? Because that’s sort of where I ended up.
+ I liked the robots a lot – they were pretty cool and I loved Joe’s relationship with TARS.
