Once Upon a Time 5x05 Thoughts

I enjoyed this episode so much more than the previous few. There was a lot I liked about it.
• Emma/Regina were excellent. I loved them being so in tune that when Arthur confronted them Emma know what Regina was going to do before she made a move. And that Regina had her back while she freed Merlin. The scene where Emma captures Regina’s tear was also lovely. “Emma there is nothing you can’t come back from if you just tell us.” ♥
• The Henry/Emma/Regina scenes were lovely. Them co-parenting him makes me happy. “Moms”! Both of them giving him great romantic advice and then comforting him after Violet rejected him.
• I loved the Henry/Emma scenes. This is what I’ve been wanting from them this season – their bond shown. I like that Emma left Henry safe passage through her wards. I liked Henry asking Emma for help and the fact that Emma set everything up in Storybrooke to make up for what she had to do in Camelot. Their talk in the car was excellent. The scene with the horse was lovely.
“I’ve missed this. Us. Operation Cobra.” – Henry
“Me too.” – Emma
Me three.
• I’m enjoying Emma as the Dark One. She’s quite different from what we’ve seen of previous Dark Ones, which could be attributed to it being at the beginning of her change but which I attribute more to her being the Saviour. I hope that actually does come into play. I like how obvious Emma’s love for Henry is and I completely believe its true and not a manipulation.
• Emma wielding Light and Dark magic to free Merlin was excellent. I liked how it looked. Plus I was half expecting Regina to be the one to do it which I was dreading so yay for that not happening.
• Regina had a lot of great lines. My favourite two were strangely enough aimed at Hook – “Over your dead body.”, lol (and I loved Snow leading her away) and “I don’t. But right now you’re useful… Ish.” Hee.
• Cruella’s car sitting on the street, for sale, was a delightful little touch.
• Wow. Merlin is hot. A+ casting show. Plus I really like his voice. What we’ve learned of his backstory thus far is a bit predictable and boring but I did find myself wondering if the Dark One who made Merlin a tree was Merlin’s lost love. That could be an interesting twist. I’m very interested in how he relates to Emma. I loved how he said her name – actually it reminded me of Ingrid, the first time we heard her say ‘Emma’. We know he showed up in her childhood at least once so I’m very curious.
• I like that Emma knew that her parents were under a spell. I figured they’d do something unforgivable while under it and that would be a contributing factor in Dark Emma and I am so glad the show didn’t go that route.
• All the mentions of Neal were nice especially the one between Henry and Emma. I liked Henry actually talking about how he misses Neal but I found his short talk with Violet a little more ‘using his dad to get points with Violet’ then sincere opening up about something painful. There were so many mentions of him that I really wonder if he’s coming back.
• Shouldn’t Henry have some skill with a sword? I distinctly remember Charming giving him sword lessons at one point.
• “You might not be a hero in their world but you will in ours.” Interesting that Regina now considers Storybrooke her world over the Enchanted Forest.
• I loved Merida in her first appearance but she was kind of blah in this episode. I think in large part because I find this whole Rumple plotline boring. I do like that she’s still fighting against Emma the best she can.
