I loved it. I'm really glad to get back to this show.
• This was an excellent Finch/Root episode. I loved everything about them.
+ “This is really nice.” – Root. I loved his little smile at this because he clearly does agree. I loved that he figured out that Root wasn’t talking with the Machine anymore because he noticed how different she seemed, how lost she looked. I loved his genuine sympathy towards her.
+ Their discussion/disagreement at the hotel was great. I particularly liked: “I will protect her. And you.” and ”She loves us, Harold.” And this exchange was wonderful:
Finch: We have more to look forward to than death.
Root: I hope so. But the life I’ve lead... a good end would be a privilege.
Finch: It’s not where you beginning it’s where you end up. You’re a brilliant woman. Comrade. And a friend.
♥ Root's smile was lovely.
+ The final scene – how happy Finch was to see Root alive and well was great. I loved his small smile. Root’s "The difference between the Machine and Samaritan is you." was great too.
+ Lots of little moments between them as well: Finch thinks 'auburn suits' Root; Root's happiness when Finch asked for her help; both their exchanges about Root's guns were great; their exchange after Root crashed the car was hilarious.
• I enjoyed watching Finch, Root and Shaw (+ a little Reese) working together to protect Simon while staying under the radar. Root vs Martine was great.
• The flashbacks were fun to watch. I enjoyed watching the various ways that Finch’s different AI’s went wrong and his reactions. It was great to see Nathan again too.
On the one hand, I love the flashbacks because I feel like they explain current Finch and his relationship with the Machine very well. Finch has always kept his distance but it was the situation with the Senator, wherein Finch thinks the Machine sent them to kill him, that started Finch’s current heavy distrust and coldness. If Finch had created 43 versions previous to the Machine and every one of them tried to kill him I can see why the Machine actively setting someone up to murdered would be something that would freak him out. It makes me a little more sympathetic to Finch’s attitude towards the Machine which I’ve honestly been feeling increasingly annoyed by (and kind of perplexed this season). I just want him to love his Machine daughter and for them to be a happy family! Is that too much to ask?
On the other hand, I don’t know that it actually works? I feel like season 1 & 2 Finch, and especially the flashbacks of Finch with the Machine in those seasons, don’t really bare out this whole ‘murderous machine attempts 1 – 43’ backstory. I think back to Finch first teaching the Machine in those flashbacks and he was so open and awed and pleased. There was no doubt or unease when she acted outside his parameters. His reaction to her saving his life also ends up feeling off with this as a backstory.
• "It's time we had a talk, you and I." YES! I'm really excited about this.
• Reese really didn’t have a lot to do. I did find this amusing: "My shrink’s not going to like that." Hee. As for what he did do I’m really not a fan of the show tying everything with John emotionally back to Carter and her death. I mean the show is being consistant with it I just don't like it.
• "If you lose your job, you lose your cover" ...does he really though? How? Wouldn't his cover just continue except now as a maybe unstable former cop? He could then become a private detective which would give him a lot more leeway in what he can do in the war against Samaritan.
• There were a couple of interesting moments with Root/Shaw where they don’t interact but we learn a lot about their relationship. I know they become canon but thus far we haven't really gotten anything explicit with them, only their usual flirting. So I was a bit surprised that when Root thought she was going to her death she turned to Finch and asked him to give Shaw a message to which he replies "I think she already knows." Knows what exactly and what does Finch know? Later on Shaw asks after Root and when Finch states that "the war has to be won at any cost" her expression spoke volumes. I have to wonder why, if Finch does know that something is between them, he chose to answer Shaw like that. It seems a little cruel. Regardless, it appears that there is a lot happening off-screen/behind the scenes and I hope we get to see more of it.
• Shaw at the Senator's call centre - "Why should you vote for him? Uhhhh, I don't know?" LOL.
• What they did to Simon Lee was kind of cruel and I don't know that I agree that it was the right choice. While it might have saved his life it also destroyed his foundations of self. I feel like telling him the entire truth really might have been a better option. Even beyond Simon himself I think telling the truth would be Team Machine's better choice. Here’s the thing – there are only five of them (plus Root’s three hackers) who know the truth, meanwhile Samaritan is creating an army. They’re treading water. I really feel that they need to start recruiting themselves. Not just anyone but they need to fight back if they’re going to survive let alone win. They need more people to know the truth even if they’re not actively doing anything at the moment. They need to create a network.
I loved it. I'm really glad to get back to this show.
