I actually read a lot of other people’s thoughts on the finale (for me) and while I agree with them in a lot of ways (Mondo clearly should have won and Gretchen’s line and clothes are very eh) I was also really taken aback by how fierce the hate for the finale, for the final decisions, for Gretchen, and for the show was. It just seemed really extreme to me. The vitriol on TWoP made me blink a lot especially with how many people were stating they would never watch the show again but I was shocked when I saw pretty much the same reaction on various other blogs, even ‘professional’ fashion ones.

Michael C’s reaction to being eliminated was painful to watch, I mostly didn’t, but I think he just lost control of his emotions and it wasn’t staged as some said. I felt really bad for him. But all the designers worked hard and all of them had their own tales of woe so those two things shouldn’t be reasons for why he should have got into the final three (better clothes, on the other hand, yes.)

Michael C: The three pieces he chose to show the judges were all very uniform in colour but that is hardly something new on this show so I don’t really see why that was such a huge ding against him. The flowing dress he made for the last minute challenge was so pretty – both the front and the back looked nice. I actually especially loved the back of the gown. The pant outfit was really interesting. The pants were good but that top was so interesting and different and I really wanted to see it closer up. The overall presentation of it was pretty wow. The third outfit... I don’t know how I feel actually. I don’t hate it like so many other people do. It’s different.

Overall I thought he should be in the final three and I really wanted to see his collection. I think his clothes are very pretty and his show would have been interesting to watch. I really wish I could find somewhere that shows his collection.

Gretchen: I agree that Gretchen should have lost to Michael in the final four. I did not like any of the clothes that she sent down the runway – not only were they boring but I found them ugly. The last minute dress she made was very meh and then when the model turned around to show how the bottom of the skirt lifted up and connected to the back I had a strong ‘wtf’ reaction to it. The piece of hers that the judges praised – the leather jacket with the weird panty shorts – was so ugly and confusing to me. What exactly was that supposed to be, why didn’t the model have a shirt, and where would anyone wear that? God, that was so ugly. That said her show at fashion week wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be based off the three pieces the judges were shown and Tim’s visit to her home. I actually kind of liked the second dress though I’m not sure about the fabric choice and the shirt on the outfit that followed was also nice. Oh, and the outfit after that one I kind of liked as well.

However while it certainly felt like a collection I didn’t like most of her fabric choices, it felt kind of blah, she made three outfits with those panty shorts that are ugly and make me go ‘who the hell would even wear those?!’ in confusion (answer: Gretchen who was wearing it in the finale judging, and possibly April who made some), and some of the clothes were just hideous. The dress that she brought onto the runway with her for the final judgment had me going ‘why?’

Overall I don’t think she should have won but I’ve often found with PR that my tastes do not always, or even often, coincide with what the judges think. I definitely think they made the wrong decision in choosing Gretchen over Mondo but I’m not going to quit watching the show. Plus the hatred towards Gretchen kind of makes me uncomfortable. It's just too much. It's not her fault the judges picked her.

Andy: I actually really liked his line but I can see why he was the first out of the final four. There was very much a – sameness about his clothes and they kind of started to blur together. His colour scheme worked for me much better than Gretchen’s – or I suppose it appealed to my taste more. I love the shade of green he used. I think it worked best in the dress he made (which I agree with the judges was lovely). I also liked the greys that he used which were very silvery. I thought it was pretty. There were a lot of pieces I really liked – the third layered shirt made me go ‘want’, the silver dress Jessica liked was pretty (but the model was bad, I was distracted by her walking the whole time), the criss-cross grey shirt second to last was neat as was the bathing suit.

A criticism Mondo levelled about Andy’s line was that it didn’t feel like it had depth which I can kind of see because of the colour choices but Andy also did a lot of subtle layer in his clothes which I think did give it depth and interest. He did seem to be as enamoured with see-through shirts as Gretchen was with panty shorts and I am not a fan of see-through. Also he had one of those weird pants he loves so much in the show and while it actually didn’t look that bad – no.

Overall I found his clothes to be very pretty and the colours really appealed to me, there were individual pieces I really liked and think his collection was pretty wearable overall but I can see why he didn’t win and am fine with it.

Mondo: I was actually kind of disappointed with his line to be honest. I still think he should have won because he is the better designer but I was expecting more from him. Throughout the season his clothes have been consistently among my favourites. They are interesting while also being pretty. Unfortunately while I think he hit ‘interesting’ with his collection ‘pretty’ was a lot more hit and miss. The black poke-a-dot dress that Nina and Michael hated both during the final four and in the collection runway was actually one of the stand-out pieces. I was with Heidi and Jessica all the way – it was stunning. Their complaints that no one would, or could, wear it were ridiculous. Wearability is certainly not a strong point of high fashion and I’m pretty sure fashion takes pride in that. There are certainly a lot of people who would look great in that dress, Heidi included (though not Jessica), but lack wearability does not suddenly make an outfit ugly. That dress would have a very specific cliental that’s all. Meanwhile many other woman who couldn’t get away with wearing it (ie. me and Jessica Simpson) can still look at it and go ‘ooo pretty’. Michael and Nina were just being ridiculous.

Anyway (clearly that bugged me!) there were a number of pieces I liked – the bubble skirt was adorable and pretty, the first outfit was nice, I liked the pants outfit made in the same material as the bubble dress and the poke-a-dot shirt and skirt combo. But there were a number of pieces that missed the mark with me. The judges loved the silk-screened t-shirt, the pink/blue/black tunic dress and Mondo’s finale four outfit and I... didn’t. I thought in fact that they were all kind of ugly. Well, the leggings on the t-shirt were interesting.

Overall the line was very interesting to watch, there were some really nice pieces, and he’s a designer that makes me want to see more of his stuff. He should have won.
