• I really have to start with the OMG moment for me – Bonnie using what Luca taught her to steal/use his power to help her with the spell. A spell that killed her grandmother and without even asking him for him help. Yikes. There really isn’t enough WTF here for this. Just – what the hell was she thinking? What Jeremy did was impulsive and stupid and basically being a teenager. But what Bonnie did – was wrong. If she’d done it as a last resort, as a grab at Luca’s power to save herself/others when being attacked, it would be something that I could understand. But that wasn’t what it was at all. She clearly planned from the moment she agreed to do it to use Luca. And I actually thought that was a good idea when I thought she was going to ask his help (while also thinking it wasn’t the best idea to trust him yet). I mean I was sure that she was going to ask him to help her with a powerful spell she couldn’t tell him about but then... she didn’t.

There are a couple levels here: there’s the fact that she used his power, without his permission, and knowingly put his life in danger and the fact that it was for something that wasn’t even life-or-death at the time. Sure when she actually did the spell it was about saving Jeremy but when she planned to do it, when she agreed, when she went to the tomb it was only because of a threat and not even an urgent one. I mean, yes, it was important (though I think they weren’t taking enough time to think of all possible options) but it wasn’t life-threateningly urgent. She could have stated truthfully that she couldn’t do it herself, they could have tried to find another witch (the Martin’s or Lucy or someone else), they could have come up with a different plan... instead Bonnie decided to risk new friend Luca’s life (using him, betraying him) for something that I just don’t think was worth it.

In times of ohmygodwe’redead you make tough/bad/wrong choices and I can get behind that. But this isn’t that time and that was so much the wrong thing to do, in every way. I’m just flabbergasted. I am really having a hard time wrapping my head around what she was thinking. It appears the whole magic/loss of moral compass thing will be her storyline this season or at least it should be because this was a doozy. Oh, Bonnie.

• Another negative with this whole debacle is that Bonnie has just burned her bridges with Luca and his father, and very possibly made herself some powerful unknown enemies (if I were them I would be pissed). These are only the third/fourth witches she has ever met and she has already alienated them. As far as she knows they could be allies, possibly a source of knowledge about what it is to be a witch and people she could turn to when her magic had her confused or scared. I mean sure the dad is working for a scary vampire and Luca was ordered to get close to her but she didn’t know that. She appeared to be getting along very well with Luca in this episode and now she’s used and almost killed him against his will so I’m thinking that budding friendship is gone. How, when she made the decision to use him, did she think things would play out afterwards? I mean best case scenario everything goes to plan and Luca isn’t hurt but I still don’t see him not seeing it as a violation. Because it was. And worst case scenario was her killing Luca with the spell that killed her grandmother – and he’s basically a child compared to Grams and undoubtedly much less powerful than her so him dying was actually a lot more likely. How the hell did she think his witch father would react to her killing him? I’m not sure she thought this out.

• How did Bonnie feel about potentially killing some innocent person? I mean she’s already shown that she will aid in the killing of someone, see Mason, in an effort to protect Elena. “To protect/help Elena” are pretty much the magic words to get Bonnie to do basically anything. But the two situations are different – Mason was a threat, who was working for Katherine (who was an even bigger threat to everyone and someone Bonnie hated), and Bonnie ‘delivered’ him but wasn’t as directly involved in his death. Luca on the other hand was ‘innocent’, a new friend and no apparent threat to anyone. How did she reconcile risking his life like that?

• Oh, another aspect of not understanding what Bonnie did this episode – up until her using Luca she appeared to have been bonding with him. The fact that she would use him like that was kind of scary!

• I love Bonnie’s unwavering devotion to Elena (oh, that hits a big kink) and I love that Bonnie is willing to sacrifice and to do horrible things in the name of protecting Elena (also hitting some kinks there!) but this moment was just... *shakes head* I think it was because there was no actual Elena/Bonnie scene and because the need to do the spell right then seemed negligible to me (pre-Jeremy) especially with that cost. I’d have been all over it if it Bonnie was doing it to save Elena because she was in danger right that second.

• I loved the scene of Bonnie and Luca channelling at the school. It reminded me very much of that Elena/Bonnie magic scene in season one that’s one of my top three TVD scenes ever. I loved Bonnie’s expression and how much she loved it and just how happy and free she looked. It was great. I love how giggly and happy she gets when learning about her magic in a fun/supportive/happy way. I want more of this.

• Jeremy was actually pretty badass at first. I thought him luring Katherine close enough, shooting her with a stake in the stomach and then dusting her unconscious all without stepping into the tomb was smart and possibly even cool. I was actually kind of impressed with him for half a second. Less smart, however, was not learning where the moonstone was before he did it. Sigh. Then he made it even worse by leaving paralyzed Katherine on the ground and heading into the tomb to look for the moonstone which beyond everything else was just – what the hell, Jeremy? That was beyond stupid. He cares nothing about Katherine, in fact he wants her dead, so why the hell wouldn’t he have staked her while she was helpless and then looked for the moonstone? On the less stupid front I do like that he threw the moonstone out of the tomb when Katherine grabbed him. Good job there.

• I did find myself wondering how much of him going ahead was about him trying to be the hero, about him trying to look good/impress Bonnie and about him trying to protect Bonnie? I think the latter was the main reason but I think the former two played a part in it as well.

• Nitpicks: How the hell did Jeremy get to the tomb before Bonnie (what was his excuse to leave before her?) and the Salvatore’s? Also how is it that Damon and Stefan didn’t hear either Jeremy attacking Katherine or her feeding on him after? They have super hearing and were right there!

• I am still not really sold on Bonnie/Jeremy. That last scene between them felt like they were moving too fast. I completely buy Jeremy crushing on Bonnie – I mean she’s totally his type (older, powerful, kind of damaged/has issues) and he’s sold it – but I don’t really buy Bonnie’s part yet. That’s where it’s falling down for me. Why does she like him so much? It feels too quick on her part. Also the way he told her to go look for a bag (for the ash) annoyed me.

• I really hate how Caroline keeps being banished from the main storyline to go off into a C plot even though I really like the Caroline/Tyler interactions. I think the main problem I’m having is that shit is going down in the A plot and I find myself wondering ‘why isn’t Caroline there’ and I can’t think of any good reason. Instead of being at the centre (or left of centre) of everything that’s happening this is the second episode where stuff has gone down, important stuff with her friends/newly made family, and she’s been off obliviously bonding with Tyler. I want her in the centre of the action with her bonding with Tyler being her C plot. Only things happen on this show so fast that giving her a plot with Tyler just automatically means that she is going to be excluded. Sigh. I get it but I don’t have to like it.

• Caroline/Tyler were great this episode. I loved the final scene. Caroline kept making me go ‘awww’.

• Poor Tyler. The video was pretty horrifying. I guess I figured that it worked like usual werewolf changes, painful but quick enough, but Mason’s first change just went on and on without him changing.

• I remember a time in the distant past when Alaric was a vampire hunter? What happened with that? I’m being sarcastic but seriously what’s going on? Is this because of Isobel’s compulsion? Is it because TPTB aren’t sure what to do with him? You know who might have been useful this episode in getting the moonstone? Alaric. I mean Jeremy was even using one of Alaric’s vampire hunting weapons. Why exactly has he been so very absent from the whole supernatural aspect of life lately/this season? Did he make some vow to have a normal life that I forgot or something? I hope the writers actually have a reason for it (like they had a reason for Bonnie’s distance at the beginning of the season) because it’s getting pretty ridiculous.

• I really liked the Elena/Alaric/Jenna scene. It was adorable and sweet and made me smile.

• I felt really bad for Matt. He just looked so worn and unhappy. I liked his apology and it was nice that someone was still feeling sorry about Sarah’s death.

• After the first Elena/Rose scene I was completely expecting Elena to co-op Bonnie into whatever her plan was and was waiting for it in anticipation. Alas it never happened. But still I love the idea of Elena working at cross purposes with the Salvatore’s and going behind their backs and succeeding in her plan. I love the idea of Elena, Rose and Bonnie going off and kicking ass (Caroline is invited as well). Maybe some future episode.

• I find myself wondering if Elijah might have a different plan then giving Elena over to Klaus. Him killing the vampires who knew about Elena’s presence, needing Elena to be safe and sparing Damon for that purpose... it makes me wonder.
