Castle 8x21 & 8x22 Thoughts
Jun. 1st, 2016 11:46 pmI don't think I've ever gone so quickly from wanting a show renewed to being okay that it was cancelled. I feel like any way they could have gotten rid of Beckett [honestly really only death] would have changed the tone of the show too much and would have felt wrong. So I'm glad that it won't be continuing without Beckett.
8x21 'Hell to Pay'
+ I think the biggest reason I'm sad that Castle was cancelled is Alexis/Hayley. I love them so much. I'm genuinely upset that we'll never get a spin-off about them because I really, really want that. Their relationship is the best.
They start the episode all dressed up to apparently go to a party but are mainly hanging out at the office happily drinking together. They end the episode having what seems to be a regular movie night (again at the office) with pizza and beers. In between we get things like: Hayley pushing Alexis away when Shaw raised the axe, Alexis clinging to Hayley as they explored the hidden vault (for the entirety of that scene) and Hayley laughing at Alexis's "anti-Christ cookies' joke (which was not that funny). We get the way Hayley can't seem to help but throw compliments Alexis's way -- she's in no rush to leave at the beginning because of Castle's "excellent taste in scotch and daughters" and then later "To commit unholy murder on two unbelievably exceptional women?"
Also it's probably just slash goggles but the way Alexis says "If I can't sleep tonight, I'm kicking your ass in the morning." made me think they'd be sharing a bed and morning.
+ Castle/Beckett were nice in what we got - I loved their prank at the end - but she felt oddly absent from the episode. Maybe because she wasn't investigating with everyone? I missed her not being there as Castle's partner.
+ Castle's credulousness and ridiculous theories are often fun but this season has been going over the line from fun to 'seriously?' a lot and this episode was one of those. ... seriously, Castle?
+ There were a bunch of creepy moments this episode that I enjoyed. It felt like a Halloween episode.
+ "So you chose fantasy over reality?" - Hayley
"Well, duh." - Castle
Yeah, this makes complete sense.
8x22 'Crossfire'
I don't actually have a lot to say about this. I've enjoyed this series for eight years and I'm sad to see it go. As an episode I enjoyed it, as the series finale it was only okay.
+ ... what was that ending? Are we supposed to take that 'Seven Years Later' title card as fact, or are we supposed to get that they died in the kitchen? It was just such an abrupt jump. I'm guessing that if the show had been renewed Beckett would have died holding Castle's hand and there'd have been no flashforward.
+ I found myself wishing that Alexis and Martha had been in that future scene. It might have felt more real then.
+ Unlike the previous two episode Beckett finally felt very present in the story which was really nice. Even better we got some really wonderful Castle/Beckett scenes. I loved both of them talking about how important their relationship is with two strangers. Castle who wouldn't change a thing and Beckett who doesn't carry her burdens alone anymore.
+ Castle and Beckett both did really dumb things this episode - Castle leaving the safe room and taking a random cab, Beckett meeting Mason alone in the middle of nowhere - but both are totally things they would do so I just mentally threw my hands in the air.
+ I loved that Beckett figured out Mason was bad herself. I enjoyed her taking him down (though it felt way too easy.) I also really loved that Castle figured it out at the end -- that there was something off with Caleb's death.
+ Hayley with the sniper rifle was kind of hot. I love how seriously she took guarding Alexis and Martha. I wish we could have gotten one more Alexis/Hayley moment.
+ I loved Espo and Ryan finally learning the truth and them refusing to not being involved. The scene where they refused to let Kate go to the house was a great little moment. I love their loyalty and love for her. I also loved the scene where they stormed the building.
