X-Men: Apocalypse
Jun. 22nd, 2016 10:20 amMeh. It's my least favourite. As a whole it doesn't really work but there were a lot of individual moments I liked and the casting of the teens was great.
Liked
+ I loved the closing scenes - Charles and Erik parting ways in a far friendlier way then ever before, Raven training a new X-Men team as Charles looks on.
+ I loved the scene where Peter saved everyone at the mansion. Best scene of the movie. Just generally I loved Peter and all his scenes.
+ While I wish they'd had more scenes together what we did get between Charles and Erik was great. I loved that it was thinking of moments with Charles and Charles being in danger that gets Erik to switch sides. I even loved him dropping the beams in an X between Apocalypse and Charles signalling his switching of sides. That was cheesy but awesome. I loved Charles belief in Erik and trying to get through to him. Basically all we did get with them was great.
+ I liked the casting of the new characters. Storm in particular looked great. I just wish she'd had more to do. I liked this Jean and Kurt a lot. They were my favourites of the new characters. Kurt was adorable. I even ended up liking Psylocke despite finding her look terrible in the trailers so I'm really glad she survived. Jubilee didn't have much to do but her look was really fun.
+ I enjoyed Apocalypse menacing Charles. Loved Charles sending the secret message to Jean and defying Apocalypse at the end of his message. I liked how defiant Charles was throughout.
+ I like this new iteration of the X-team: Raven [leader], Hank [co-leader?], Jean, Scott, Ororo, Kurt, Peter.
+ Hank doesn't have much to do but I liked what we did get. I love him as Charles's second, always there.
+ I mostly liked how the Charles/Raven relationship played out. I loved their concern for each other and Charles desperation to save her when Apocalypse was killing her. I love where the movie ended with their relationship - Raven back at the mansion, them working as equals with Raven leading the X-Men.
+ The whole Phoenix effect looked awesome and I like how it played out. It actually makes me excited to see what they will do with the Phoenix storyline.
+ I loved the Charles/Jean relationship. They were great and I kind of ship it.
+ "I think that was my favourite tree." - Charles. Hee. That was a fun scene. It was a really nice tree! Just generally I liked the school scenes though I wish there had been some physically obvious mutants there too.
+ I liked Erik and Jean working together to rebuild the mansion. It made absolutely no sense but was a nice little bonding moment between them.
+ I liked the Wolverine cameo. Poor Logan, he's never going to escape that fate is he?
+ So post-Apocalypse do the mutants he gave power-ups to - Ororo, Charles, Erik, Psylocke - keep their new awesome powers?
Didn't Like
+ The film as a whole just didn't come together for me? It felt disjointed and it felt like most of the characters lacked sufficient screen time/story. idk, as a whole it left me feeling blah.
+ Post-Days of Future Past Erik moving to Poland, marrying a human woman, starting a family with her, quitting anything to do with his fight for mutants and getting a mundane factory job makes NO GODDAMN SENSE. It would have made some more sense if she was a mutant but a human? No. I hated this so much.
+ I really, really wish there had been a slight mind-control element to Apocalypse collecting his horsemen because otherwise it was too easy. Oh, here have a lot of power, now help me destroy the world, yes/yes? Uh, no. What? I don't even want full mind control just a light push that's fairly easily broken.
+ What exactly has Raven being doing this whole time? Wandering the world, hiding, possibly helping random mutants?
+ Sad that Wanda wasn't in the movie or even mentioned. Does this mean she doesn't exist in this version?
+ So is Kurt Raven's son or not. I don't like the idea of them not being related and I feel like their interactions when she saved him was ambiguous enough that I could buy her being his mom and knowing it [and going there specifically to save Kurt) but then there was no hint in the rest of the movie of that being true and you'd think there'd be some exchange between Raven and Charles if that were true.
+ Moira's inclusion in this left me cold but I am really glad that Charles gave her back her memories.
+ Since the movie made Magneto's wife Magda why did they name their daughter Nina instead of Anya like the comics?
