Good god, that ending.
• No, nope, no way, unacceptable, NO. What the ever loving fuck, Red?!!!! I refuse to accept that she's dead. That last movement of her arm wasn't her dying, she knew what Red was going to do and she prepared for it and there's someone who was tracking her and will show up with medical care and she will be fine, yup. Lalalala. OR! He didn't shoot to kill her because, despite his words, he loves her and so in the next episode (or further into the season) it'll be revealed that she was only wounded and survived. I like this a little better even if it makes slightly less sense because the idea of Red killing Mr. Kaplan really hurts.
• Mr. Kaplan was amazing all episode. I love her. The performance was wonderful. I loved her smack down of Tom when he apologized for torturing her friend. I like that she accepted it at first because he was only doing his job. I loved her telling him that she refused to make it easier for Red because she's not there "to make him feel better" and she's not there 'to make Tom feel better' either. That was a great moment. I loved her running down Mato. I loved all her interactions with Red. I loved her continuing to tell Red the truth.
• I do understand that Red is in a difficult position because Mr. Kaplan knows all of his secrets and he doesn't trust her anymore. Perhaps even more importantly she knows truths about Liz and has proven that she will work with Liz against him. So he doesn't feel like he can send her away but at the same time his feelings of betrayal and the pain from that won't allow him to keep her with him.
This isn't even without precedent - back in season one Red smothered Grey after he betrayed Red to Anslo Garrick. It just didn't have the weight of this moment because we didn't see as much of the Red/Grey relationship. It did appear that Grey was very close to Red and knew a lot about him (but not Liz). He also killed Mr. Vargas. So we knew he would do it but... it's Mr. Kaplan! It's like Red killing Dembe. And she was working to protect Liz (and Agnes) which is Red's highest priority! You'd think that would have some weight.
• "You would presume to decide what was best for me. Even if I resolve the anger, the pain you caused. I can't trust you. Ever. I'm standing before a stranger. Yet I believe that you did what you thought was best." HOLY hyprocrite. This could be Liz saying it to Red and it would make 100% sense and none of it would be wrong. Good freaking god. I love Red, and I still believe he thinks what he's doing with Liz is for her best, but wow. I always thought he was a pretty self-aware person and yet.
• We get one little Red/Liz moment. I love that he had to be there to see for himself that she was alive and well even if he couldn't bear to speak with her yet. So he's still hurt and angry and feeling betrayed and appears like he might be giving her the cold shoulder. I wonder how Liz is going to react to him? Is she going to be as unapologetic as Mr. Kaplan while still feeling sorry for hurting Red? He's probably her best hope for saving Agnes and I wonder how that could affect their interactions.
• I'm not sure why Liz seemed willing to accept Kirk's "there was no fire, it was all a lie" just because the Summer Palace wasn't burnt down. We know that the Rostova's had multiple residences so even if we ignore all Liz 'remembered' memories in season 2 (Constantin kidnapping her) there's nothing to say that there still couldn't have been another house that burnt down. It's not really that big of a gotcha. I'm pretty sure the fire happened. Red has the scars to prove it.
• I liked getting to see Katarina again. I hope this season has a lot of Liz have flashbacks as she remembers her childhood so we can see her and her relationship with Liz more.
• I like Liz being proactive but pulling an escape attempt while in the air over the ocean and shooting the pilot was not the best idea she's ever had.
• I find Katja very interesting because she appears as if she's around Liz's age and since her mother was the 'palace keeper' before her it means that Katja could very well have known Liz as a child. I really like the idea of the two of them being friends as kids and there was something about the way she talked and looked at Liz that makes me think that she did know her. I hope she shows up again.
