Gilmore Girls 8x03 Thoughts

Meh. Discounting the shock from the reveal in Spring this is probably the worst episode of the three. A part of me doesn't even want to watch the last episode, sigh.
Good
• Michel and Lorelai's scenes were lovely. Michel leaving is genuinely sad and I felt bad for both of them. I love that Michel doesn't really want to leave but he needs more (challenge, money) and Lorelai knew it all along. I also loved the fact that Lorelai has been paying Michel from her own money and he knew that. I love them.
• I loved the Doyle/Rory call. Doyle wrote an article for the paper and in fact apparently reads the Stars Hollow Gazette. I'm so happy that they keep in touch and are friends.
• I liked Rory visiting Emily and worrying about her.
• The secret bar was great. I loved Lane and Zach playing in the background. I loved everyone hiding when Taylor walked by.
• The Jess/Rory scene was really nice.
• I actually agree with Jess that Rory writing a book is a good idea. We do keep hearing about how good a writer she is while seeing how bad she is at the whole journalism thing so becoming a writer makes perfect sense. Though I still like the idea of her becoming a teacher. Actually Rory taking over the Gazette completely and revitalising it could have been a good direction too.
• That short Luke/Jess moment through the window was nice.
• Clinging to whatever scrap of goodness in this Rory/Logan mess: I liked "It's a reflex. I get upset and I call Logan." I liked that even though she just spend a day calling and hanging up on him he wasn't upset at all and was eager to hear about what was bothering her.
• Lane is such a good friend. I wish we could see more of her life.
• I've switched around and now I'm enjoying the whole Gerta maid situation and the ever increasing number of family members showing up at the house. Maybe because there was no yelling at them to try and get them to understand.
• For the most part the delivering newspapers bit worked for me.
• I was annoyed with Rory during the grave scene but I did like her calling out Lorelai on going passive-aggressive with her.
Not good
I get that the girls' lives can't be all sunshine and roses and there needs to be drama and conflict and setbacks in their lives but I really wish the show was happier on a whole. Why does every part of their lives have to be falling apart? Also I'm having a hard time seeing it as nine years later because it doesn't feel like any of the relationships have really progressed all that much.
• Luke and Lorelai falling apart. That diner fight was kind of hard to watch and vicious and what the hell with Luke thinking Lorelai could be cheating on him? What? Where did that even come from? It bothers me how terrible they are at communicating even after season 7 and 9 years together.
• While I agree that Rory writing a book could be a good idea I think writing Gilmore Girls: The Book is terrible. Or rather it might have worked if it had become a group project with Lorelai being behind the idea 100% and Emily being dragged into it and them working together and through writing it working out their issues and becoming closer - I would have loved that.
But when Lorelai refuses the idea of Rory writing what is largely a story about her, and indicating strongly how uncomfortable she is with the idea, and Rory decides to completely ignore and brush that aside because of her own life issues I am done. Rory was so obnoxious during their fight. Her whine about how she 'has to' otherwise it's 'grad school or grovelling for jobs she doesn't want' is so unbelievable selfish and bratish and ohmygod grow up! This is her beloved mother! Maybe she should consider Lorelai's feelings on this instead of complaining about Lorelai not being on her side. Maybe she should consider being on her mom's side. Ugh.
• Still so unhappy about what they've done to Rory/Logan and to Logan himself (all that character growth dumped, whyyy???) So now Odette has moved in with him but he's still intending to keep seeing Rory? Is she just supposed to be his mistress for the rest of their lives? WTF?
• Stars Hollow The Musical was a neat little idea that I might have liked more except that it just went on and on and on and oh my god why are they wasting all this time on this nonsense when they could be spending it on Lane or Paris or Emily? It should have been so much shorter, like a couple minutes max, and perhaps intercut with Rory's storyline. Instead it was a drag, though I did enjoy Lorelai's horrified reactions.
• Lorelai and Rory being all judgmental about the people at the pool was annoying. Actually the whole thing with the kids as their servants didn't work for me either.
• While I liked the Jess/Rory scene it also gave me serious flashbacks to season 6 where Jess also popped up randomly as Rory was spiralling to talk some sense into her, and it kind of irritates me. It would have been nice for Rory to figure this out herself without needing someone else to come in and point her in the right direction.
• Rory and Jess haven't seen each other in 4 years, really? Even with Luke and Lorelai together? Does Jess not come to Stars Hollow for holidays? Weird.
• Rory snubbing the 30something gang was on the one hand understandable because she's in denial and trying hard not to admit her failures (see the whole 'not back' it which I didn't mind) but on the other it's rude and came off snobbish. I also didn't like Lorelai snubbing the mother of the 30something gang's parents group.
• Why the heck wouldn't Rory stepping in as editor for the Gazette include a salary? That makes no sense especially considering that Taylor even points out that they have money but were closing because of staffing issues? Also you'd have thought saving the Gazette would be Taylor's priority.
• Why is Rory complaining about being broke when she very clearly isn't? Jet-setting to London whenever she feels like it, planning to buy an apartment in Queens... she had to have gotten a substantial inheritance from Richard. I feel like this little bit of 'angst' was thrown in there just because but with no real thought behind it. If they wanted her broke it could have been a good way to get her back to Stars Hollow but that's not the route they chose to take so no take-backs.
