I’m enjoying it. It’s silly and ridiculous and amusing.
The animation is different (the characters become featureless blobs, for instance, or Sunako becomes child size) but I don’t mind it. Well, Sunako becoming child size constantly has begun to wear thin as I get further into the series.
• There is some gender stuff that bugs me but that probably shouldn’t be unexpected in a show about four gorgeous guys making over a girl, against her will, into being a beautiful lady.
- Episode 6 in particular was bugging me with Noi being all ‘I must make myself useful to Takenaga so he will like me’ and the boys not doing any housework and relying on Sunako. But then you get Noi who is just as bad at housework (her calling her mom to figure out how to work the washing machine made me laugh) and her figuring out what was wrong with Sunako so quickly and then making a plan to fix it – that was great.
And then we have Noi using the trope of playing dumb to make a guy like her in episode 7. (headdesk)
• Actually it's interesting how this anime plays with tropes sometimes straight and sometimes subverting them. So while there are gender issues that bug me it also subverts things in ways I love.
- Like how it’s Sunako who has to always save Kyouhei. In episode 3 he’s kidnapped, and ogled/put on display for his beauty, and she shows up to save him (while he cowers) and then beats the crap out of everyone. So much subverting there.
- In episode 7 when she’s ‘kidnapped’ Kyouhei shows up to save her because “She’s a girl after all.” ... and then he’s beaten up and she saves him and again beats the crap out of everyone.
- I liked how Kyouhei was so sure in the beginning that Sunako could take care of herself.
- I’m amused by how the other three guys react to her beating the gang leader up by being all ‘she’s scary!’ and then Noi is like “go! Finish him!” Hee.
• I also love how everyone, but especially Kyouhei, thinks Sunako is awesome when she’s being tough/beating people up but also her being confidant/assertive.
• The Goth-Loli girls are clearly meant to be comic relief but I find them more annoying than anything and they don’t add anything to the show.
