iaria: (Sailor Moon is excited!)

So I will be watching this series. There are issues – the acting is mostly so-so with occasional forays into yikes and okay, the fighting is eh, there are a lot of plot-holes and moments that cause me to shake my head, the logic is sometimes not there, character reactions can be shaky – and while that might be enough to turn me off other shows not so much with this one. That is because this show is like catnip for me. It’s like it was made to order. Things I love:

- It’s an urban fantasy series. I love urban fantasy!

- Female lead. Increasingly I’ve been finding myself far more drawn to female leads.

- Female second/sidekick! How often do you find a show with a two female leads? Not very often! Two guys, sure, they’re all over the place. But two women is much rarer and I love it.

- Bisexual female lead, YES! This makes me so happy. And, while it can change, so far the show has done well in showing her as bisexual and not straight-but-will-flirt/make-out-with-girls-to-titillate.

- New supernatural creature. I love that Bo is a succubus which is not something you see often (I can only think of Roxie in The Middleman, oh and the one in The Hollows series). It also appears we’ll be getting many different species which is nice.

- There is some racial diversity. Okay, it’s not the best. But it is better than I originally thought it would be so I’m giving it a plus.

- Made in Canada and set in Canada. It doesn’t really have anything to do with anything but it pleases me.

- Bechdel passing like whoa. We have our main lead, her sidekick and two further female reoccurring/cast. In the first episode alone Bo/Kenzi had several (4!) Bechdel passing conversations while Bo/Lauren and Bo/The Morrigan had a Bechdel pass as well. That's great.

1x01 ‘It’s a Fae, Fae, Fae, Fae World’

This was a fairly good episode. There was some fail – world building is shaky as is the acting and writing in parts – but overall I liked it.

• I like Bo a lot already and Kenzi’s great too. I liked their relationship though it didn’t drag me in as awesome. (I’m putting it down to the acting/writing.)

• I loved how Kenzi told Bo that she could make life decisions for herself.

“Learn to enjoy your shit already! You can freaking control people by touch... and not in a creepy hand job way. That is awesome!” – Kenzi Awesome! Now I think Bo deserves some of her ‘emo’ since she does have to kill people to survive and based on a comment to Lauren has possibly even accidentally killed a lover. But I still loved that line.

• I love that Kenzi is obviously going to be the person who grounds Bo and keeps her from becoming depressed and will undoubtedly be the person to tell her when she’s wrong or being an ass. She’ll be Robin to Bo’s Batman – and I love that Kenzi made that comparison herself.

• While Bo is very attractive the way everyone reacts to her makes me think that there’s an... aura around her that makes her even more attractive to people. Pheromones perhaps.

• I can see myself shipping Bo/Dyson and/or Bo/Lauren.

• I liked Lauren’s “My god you’re beautiful.” and how even though she knew Bo was using her abilities she still wanted to go along with her.

• I loved the short exchange of looks between Dyson and Bo as they walked past each other. It was the first time that Dyson made me go ‘mmm’. I also really liked their kiss/make-out session and the reason for it.

“That was like the fourth of July in my mouth.” – Bo Hee. Though now that I think about it – isn’t this show supposed to be set in Canada for once? Or is this yet another Canadian show set in a not-named American town? Hmmm.

• I was fairly surprised by how easily Bo killed her first opponent. Yes she kills, and she killed the creep at the beginning easily enough but that’s feeding and with the first under fey she slit his throat and that’s a very different thing.

• I love the names of the characters. They’re different and interesting. I love ‘Kenzi’.

• When Dyson was explaining that Bo would be facing ‘under-fae’ who don’t fit in the human world I was expecting them to look noticeably other but while the second did the first one didn’t really. So why don’t they fit in? Also does ‘under-fae’ include anyone who can’t fit in or are there specific species that fit under that heading?
