The Vampire Diaries 2x05 Review

Wow. This was an awesome. I loved it. It surprised me several times including an OMG moment. The character interactions were perfect.
My current favourite four characters are Elena, Stefan, Damon and Caroline (last season Bonnie was in my top four but this season I’ve liked her less and Caroline has become completely awesome) and they were the A plot of this episode which is probably a huge reason why I loved the episode. I could watch an episode about the four of them locked together in the Salvatore house. In fact that sounds awesome. That should totally be the next episode – with added Liz in the basement. That would be awesome!
• The thing that I’m most excited about for the next episode is the whole Liz Forbes situation. I talk above about them all being locked together in the Boarding House and that’s actually what I hope happens. At the moment I am far more interested in how that situation plays out than in the whole Katherine/Mason moonstone situation. I want to see Liz interacting with Caroline, and the Salvatore brothers especially Damon, and even Elena. In fact maybe especially Elena since she’s the only human of the group and because she accepts all three of the vampires (she is mad at Damon but she still accepts him). I think Elena would be the best person to talk to Liz right now. But I really want Liz to realise that a) Caroline is still Caroline, and b) that Damon is her friend. I want the episode (or the next, however long they last) to end with Liz leaving the boarding house without being compelled. I want that really, really badly. I have really high hopes for various bonding in the next episode (Damon/Liz, Caroline/Liz, Damon/Caroline, Caroline/Stefan, Caroline/Elena, Elena/Liz, the usual Elena/Stefan/Damon).
• Once again Bonnie wasn’t in the episode and Alaric and Jenna have yet again disappeared. I actually like that TPTB won’t shove every character in an episode and they’ll leave them out if there isn’t a place for them. I do think this episode could have had these three – I mean it appears most of the town was there so where were the three of them? – but I didn’t mind their absence. Oh, wait, Matt wasn’t in the episode as well. Clearly I didn’t miss him either. Anyway, I like that they don’t stick all the characters in every episode just because (largely in part no doubt to the fact that my favourites are always in every episode).
• Stefan Salvatore – I loved him this episode, especially in the beginning. He really does sneak up on you with his awesomeness, doesn’t he? Last year it was a slow process of love though by the end I was fully there. But this season he’s just been so obviously awesome every episode.
- Mason: Tell your brother to watch his back.
(Mason starts to walk away, Stefan grabs his arm and pulls him around)
Stefan: Well, I’m guessing that he only has to worry about that at a full moon otherwise you’re not as strong. Am I right? Or you would have killed Damon by now. (pause) There’s one of you. There’s two of us. I think you’re the one who needs to watch his back.
I ♥ Stefan. That was just so awesome. It totally made me squee. I love that he went to Mason and how the entire conversation progressed. He started by offering an apology for what Damon did, he brought up the innocents who’d be harmed including Mason’s family (which was also a nice little threatening dig that didn’t come off threatening), he said “let’s say we quit the whole alpha male fighting thing and call a truce” and I love when guys are called on that alpha male posturing crap, then he added “I’m here to make sure neither of you make another (mistake)” (putting himself in a position of power and authority, of being the one doing the right thing) and then when Mason not only turned him down but then threatened Damon Stefan threatens him back, and does it so well. Just - ♥ everything about that exchange I love.
• I seriously love how much Stefan loves his brother and is always on his side. We also see this later when Mason poisons Damon with vervain in public and Stefan’s reaction is:
“Okay. I don’t like it. He’s making threats. He could expose us. We need to put him down.” Oh, Stefan. I love you. Also I love how Damon looked all confused for a moment that Stefan was agreeing with him.
- Damon: What are you doing?
Stefan: Negotiating peace on your behalf.
Damon: But I don’t want peace!
Stefan: Well, consider it opposite day.
LMAO. Love it. I loved Damon’s tone, so much a little child pouting when he doesn’t get his own way, and Stefan the mature adult not giving in.
- I love how handsy Damon was with Stefan in their first scene, and how Stefan just stood there accepting his touch and then Stefan touching him back. then later Stefan pushing Damon down and Damon letting him. And then even later Damon touching/checking Stefan’s wounds.
- I love how Damon looked at Stefan when he was lying unconscious in the catacombs. He loves his brother just as much as his brother loves him.
• “Oh come on, you and Elena don’t fight.” – Damon. I love that Damon didn’t fall for Stefan and Elena’s act.
• Caroline Forbes – man, I love her so much this season. Becoming a vampire was seriously the best thing to happen to her. Things I love about her this episode:
- I loved that she realised she was being unfair and mean to her mom. She’s a teenager and they clearly have a tense and unhappy relationship (and not all of its on Caroline) and Caroline lashes out but recognises when she’s being unfair.
- I loved that she told Elena the truth about Katherine. That the first time she started to because Elena was her friend and she couldn’t keep being a bad friend to her. Then when she finally confessed it was because she was scared and unhappy and was opening up to her friend.
- I loved that Caroline knew something was wrong and immediately tried to figure it out by getting to higher ground and using her vampire-hearing. (PS, I still want Caroline training to be a vampire with the Salvatore’s montages, please!)
- I adored the Caroline/Mason confrontation:
Caroline: I can take you.
Mason: Want to bet?
Caroline: Yeah. I do.
(Caroline kicks his ass.)
Awesome! ♥ He underestimated her because she’s a teenager and blonde and in return she kicked his ass. I love it. She was taking a risk there since he had Elena in a head lock.
- I love that despite the fact that it would reveal the truth about herself to her mom, one of her greatest fears, Caroline still followed Elena into the catacombs to save Stefan and Damon.
• Damon and Liz – oh, I love their friendship. How bizarre is it that theirs is one of my favourite friendships of the show? The only Damon friendship that beats it is Elena (Stefan doesn’t count). As someone who loves them this was an excellent episode for them and next week has so much potential (oh, show, don’t let me down).
- “No. Damon Salvatore is my friend.” . Oh, Liz. I loved her defending him and being unwilling to consider that he could be a vampire. But I also love that she still went with the vervain plan because why not? Her reaction to learning that he was a vampire was pretty heartbreaking. She was so upset.
- I liked Damon being all considerate and obliging with Liz – asking how he could help (in his charming way), worrying about her, trying to be there for her. I also loved that he went to Caroline and asked her “Why are you being a bitch to your mom.”
- Caroline: No, no, no, no, no!
Stefan: Damon don’t!
Elena: Damon please!
Damon: Relax guys. No one’s killing anybody. (to Liz) You’re my friend.
- “My daughter’s gone.” – Liz
“You have no idea how wrong you are about that.” – Damon
I loved the expression on Damon’s face here. It would be fabulous if Damon was a large part of bringing Liz and Caroline back together. It’d go a little way towards being to make-up for what he did to Caroline.
• I really liked Elena this episode, though really I always do. She was always there but she didn’t really do anything that stuck out too much. I loved her being a friend to Caroline, I loved her and Stefan and her supporting him and offering her blood, and I loved her going in to save Stefan and Damon by herself.
• “What you did for Caroline’s mom – that was the Damon who was my friend.” – Elena. Aww. Is that the sound of the first crack in the ice around her heart towards him?
• “She’s stronger than me and unless that changes I can’t protect you.” – Stefan .... Except Katherine is way older than Stefan and thus will always be stronger. Also it’s not like Damon was doing any better in this episode despite him drinking human blood. Stefan wanting to build up a tolerance for human blood is a good idea and I’m glad that Elena (and Damon) are supporting him.
• “It’s you and me Stefan. Always.” – Elena. I really loved this last scene. These two are so wonderful.
• Elena once again got captured and used as a hostage but honestly she’s a normal teenage girl surrounded by supernatural creatures so what can you expect? Hell Mason, even if he’d been human, could still have taken Elena – because she’s human and tiny and pretty physically weak. That’s not her fault! Still... can she get upgraded in some way? Perhaps in some way connected to how it is she is the exact double of Katherine?
• “I know that we don’t get along and that you hate me.” Oh, Caroline. I really hope we get some background on the Liz/Caroline relationship. Why is it so bad?
• They have to know that compelling Liz to forget what she learned is a very shaky thing. There are the two deputies that disappeared and any potential evidence linking Liz to them before their disappearances. Most importantly there’s Mason who has told her once and doesn’t appear to have any reason not to tell her again.
• Mason/Katherine was very unexpected but at the same time it just made me go ‘oh, Katherine’ because it’s not actually that unexpected. It’s Katherine. She’s clearly using Mason – as a minion/ally and to get the moonstone. I very much got a similarity between them and between Anna and Ben. If it’s more than that it will surprise me.
• I wonder if the moonstone allows werewolves to control their ‘curse’ so that they can turn or not turn when they want (or perhaps maintain control while turned?) If so why does Katherine want it back? Could it also do something for vampires? Is this another creation of a witch?
• Oh, yeah, there was also that whole other B plot with Jeremy and Tyler wasn’t there? To be honest I wasn’t paying very much attention to it. Compared to everything else I’m finding them rather boring.
• I did have a couple issues with the episode:
- The killing of the two red shirt deputies has made me rather uncomfortable. The way they were killed...
- While I love that Caroline brought Elena with her in the search for Damon and Stefan once it was clear that something was seriously wrong Caroline should have used her speed to get to them.
- When Caroline attacked Mason she kept control, she hurt him but didn’t kill him nor did she bite him. So why exactly would she bite the police office a short time later especially knowing that her mom is standing right there? It makes no sense.
- Katherine having threatened Matt as a means to keep Caroline in line is okay. Clearly it would work. But what about her mom? We know she threatened Liz as well so why wouldn’t that be brought up here especially with this episode? Caroline wanting to protect her mom, Caroline being afraid for Liz would have tied in perfectly with how this episode ended with Liz and Caroline. It feels like a missed and obvious opportunity.
- Why would Caroline be sleeping on the couch? This used to be a boarding house! I’m pretty sure there is an extra bedroom somewhere in there for her.
Wow. This was an awesome. I loved it. It surprised me several times including an OMG moment. The character interactions were perfect.
