I’ve been watching both Switched at Birth and The Nine Lives of Chloe King. I liked SaB more in the beginning and really wasn’t sold on Chloe King but I’m enjoying it much more now. What I love about both of these shows is that at least half their casts are female and that the female characters have significant relationships with each other. Both of them feature great mother/daughter relationships – CK has two and SaB has five (!) (if you count the grandmother) – and those relationships are very important to the story especially in SaB. Chloe King however does better on the female friendship front.
What I’m most interesting in on Switched at Birth is the Daphne/Bay relationship and the complicated family relationships.
- As far as romance goes I found the Bay/Ty one very cute. I loved their first meeting.
- I like the Daphne/Emmett friendship but we got a couple exchanges of looks between Emmett and Bay that made me go ‘hmm’.
- I liked Liam all right, mostly I find him hot, but while I liked his first scene with Daphne and kind of shipped them his half-hearted response to his friends being asses made me frowny face at him.
- I like that both of the deaf people on the show are played by deaf actors.
Switched At Birth 1x03 ‘Portrait of My Father’
• Seeing Regina and Kathryn’s female friends was great. I particularly liked Regina’s best friend Melody. Marlee Matlin is an actress I like and I hope we get to see more of her. I wish that Kathryn’s friendships were shown as deeper, and not shallow like Regina thinks, but in the scenes with her two friends they sadly did feel shallow. Denise does have possibility. I thought she was dismissive of Kathryn but I liked her reaction to the truth. Now we just need to see the girls have some female friendships.
• Daphne’s shut down of Liam was excellent. I love that she didn’t accept his non-apology justifications for not standing up for her. I was really not expecting it. I think that makes the resolution of the storyline bug me even more.
John tells Daphne that “I just think you don’t like to play outside of your comfort zone, you don’t like to get into the fray.” as if that’s automatically a bad thing and then that leads to her going to see Liam and forgiving him. Uh. How are those connected? Daphne wasn’t ignoring Liam because she was scared she was ignoring him because he was a jerk. I would much rather have had her see/overhear him defending her (or Emmett) or something similar as a reason to give him another chance.
• I was very happy about finally getting to hear from Regina why she hasn’t tried harder to get to know Bay. We’ve had both the Kennish’s trying to bond with Daphne and it’s been bizarre how Regina seems to have no interest in Bay. It’s really been bugging me.
• I liked the final Bay/John scene.
• I wish that Regina’s ex was more in the picture. I want Daphne to have a relationship with him so that the girls’ relationships with their dads are as complicated as the ones with the moms. I want John to have to deal with the girls having another dad like Kathryn and Regina have to deal with each other.
• The complete lack of Bay/Liam scenes is very weird. I mean they started the series a couple, broke up in the previous episode and now in episode three not only are they both pursuing other people with Bay actually dating someone else (with kissing!) but there is no indication that they were ever actually dating. So what was the point of it? I mean does Bay seriously not have any angst about breaking up with her boyfriend? In the pilot it appeared that she hung out with Liam a lot so why hasn’t Kathryn said anything? Something that would have made a lot of sense would have been for Daphne to see a picture of Liam in Bay’s room. We could have seen Bay’s feelings over the break-up, Daphne could hear about another side of Liam and perhaps given her a different reason to make up with him (or not).
The Nine Lives of Chloe King 1x03 'Green Star'
• The Chloe/Amy and Chloe/Jasmine scenes were excellent. I also enjoyed the Chloe/Meredith and Chloe/Valentina scenes. This episode was pretty much 80% female/female interactions and I still just can’t get over it. I love it. I love that the most important relationship in Chloe’s life is with her mother. I love that the leader of the Mai is female.
• I don’t understand why Chloe doesn’t just tell her mom the truth about her. It’s not like it’s something she’d need to take on faith nor is there any implication that Meredith would reject her or that she thinks she would reject her. I see no reason to keep it a secret.
• I liked what we saw of the Jasmine/Valentina relationship. At first it appears that they hed a very distant relationship, especially compared to Chloe’s with her mom, and I was expecting Valentina to be a hardass with her daughter. Instead at the end we see that in their own way they are really close. I loved that despite being angry Valentina told her daughter that she ‘did well’ and then we have that moment where she touches her back and they look at each other. They may not be as open and as affectionate as Chloe and her mom but they clearly love each other a lot. I can’t wait to see more of their relationship.
• I really like Jasmine; she’s pretty kickass. I love how great a fighter she is and how she is willing to sacrifice herself to protect Chloe/do her job without a thought.
• I’m shipping Chloe/Jasmine and as far as the two canon potential romances for her I like Chloe/Alek much more than Chloe/Brian. I don’t really care about Brian at all thus far.
