iariaThe more I watched the live action the more I liked it and the more pleased I was that it was three seasons long. However after watching the first season I’ve discovered that much of the cast changes from season one on – her family stays and her antagonist vice-principle but all the students are gone (not unexpected) including Shin (unexpected) as well as the other teachers and Shinohara. With this new information my interest in watching the other two seasons has decreased a lot. I love Yankumi and I want to see more of her but I’m pretty attached to this cast. So I’m not actually going to watch the next two seasons right now though I might later once there’s some distance from this season.
I liked Nakama Yukie as Kumiko a lot. I haven’t seen her in any other role but thought she was excellent.
• Yankumi's constant speeches did get to be a bit much by the end of the season for me.
• The ‘fighting’ was horrible and though it did get slightly better as the series went on, and I got more used to it, it did make it harder to like the series in the beginning.
• The biggest surprise for me was Matsumoto Jun as Sawada Shin, who I ended up really liking in this drama. I was wary once I realised who he was because I disliked him in Hana Yori Dango and he’s the biggest reason why I’ve stalled in watching that series. But apparently it’s not that I dislike the actor I just really disliked him in that role (I think he was miscast).
Shin is very similar in some ways to Tsukasa Dōmyōji – or, well, he shouldn’t be really and yet it’s the feel I got when I first started this series. What I find interesting is that Shin is a lot more how I picture Tsukasa being then the character we actually get. Jun’s Tsukasa would fit far better among Yankumi’s 3-D delinquents then with F4.
Anyway I liked Shin so much that I even found myself shipping Shin and Yankumi by the end and his disappearance is a large part of why I’m not going to continue watching.
• I loved watching Shin's reactions to Yankumi. He had the best expressions.
