'The Trolley Problem'

I loved this episode.

+ Okay, I'm shipping Eleanor/Michael now. I love that it was Eleanor who figured out that Michael was just torturing them again, her having fun with the trolley carnage and her shared delight with Michael over posting her cousin's credit card number on reddit. It's still a little disorienting when Eleanor acts so clearly like pilot!Eleanor before I remember that, for now at least, all that character growth and empathy of season one are gone (and then I feel sad.) And yet that's really given us some great Eleanor/Michael interactions. Putting Eleanor back to step one puts her on a more equal footing with Michael in learning to be good and by being forced to try and help him be good she's making those steps herself but in a slightly different way. As she rightly points out this episode they are actually really similar and I'm really enjoying that.

+ Michael torturing Chidi with the trolley problem was honestly hilarious. Poor Chidi. Buuut he makes the best faces and that really was an inspired bit of torture.

+ Ted Danson was delightful. He is so perfect as Michael.

+ I love that Chidi doesn't even hesitate when asked to sacrifice Eleanor to save five others. The two choice situations are vastly different but this is Chidi who always has a panicked moral conundrum for almost any choice he needs to make. Yet with this there wasn't even a second of hesitation, not a moment of babbling to buy time just straight out made a choice.

+ I loved the Janet subplot. I've been disappointed about how Janet/Jason were dropped with the reboot so Janet's unknowing displays of jealousy over Jason/Tahani are so great. Her ride-or-die protocol is still in effect and I can't wait to see where that goes. I hope that it leads not only to Janet and Jason learning about their relationship but of the others getting to learn more about their first take in The Good Place.

+ ): to Jason being sad that Tahani's never told him he's pretty. Hopefully at some point we get someone telling him that. (Janet!)

+ I love that Eleanor considers Tahani the hottest and Jason the nicest of their group.

+ I love that even Michael's presents have downsides. Eleanor and Jason with her disgusting sauce flavour and the fact that his balloon popped immediately and less obviously with the others with Chidi's book perhaps containing things that could disillusion him on Kant, and Tahani's diamond immediately encouraging some of her worst traits like shallowness and materialism, and her need to be better than others.
