Valor Condederation Series by Tanya Huff
Jan. 28th, 2018 07:57 pmI really enjoyed this series. I found all books enjoyable to read. In a lot of the ways they feel like the opposite from the Yoon Ha Lee series I also just read in that they are very classic light-reading scifi. This is not a knock on either but overall I enjoyed this more.
+ I really like how each book went with a different trope – alien planet/diplomatic mission/siege against a horde, explore an unknown alien ship, training exercise turned deadly when the machines are turned against them, and then escaping captivity (with your enemies). Fun!
+ Torin is a great POV character. I love how competent she is and her loyalty and compassion.
+ I liked the aliens. Both the Krai and di’Taykan are neat.
+ The supporting characters in all the books were great. I think grumpy cares-more-than-he-shows Werst is my favourite. I really loved getting to finally meet some of the Others/Primacy as actual people in the final book. Freenim was my favourite.
+ Kichar vs Everim makes me want a short story about them being forced together on a peace summit, forced to solve a threat together, and beating each other up before becoming the closest of friends.
+ I wish the Silsviss had shown up in more than just the first book. It would have been nice to see Cri Sawyes again.
+ I rather loved the whole cult of personality and legend that was growing up around Torin over the course of the books. Then there was the whole Progenitor situation with the di’Taykan. I really would have loved another book exploring both of those things. What exactly did being a Progenitor mean? What I got was that if she hooked up with a di’Taykan (or not) and reproduce she would begin a new family line?
I enjoyed a lot what we got in the final book with Kyster’s unwavering faith and clinginess and the way he imprinted on Torin. I just loved Kyster and his relationship with Torin, and also with Durlin Vertic. Kichar’s hero worship and Darlys almost actual worship. I wanted to see where it would go!
+ On the negative the romance didn’t entirely work for me. I just don’t care about Torin/Craig and while it was fine in their first book I’m meh about them ending up together. Part of that is also that I’m meh with scifi/fantasy series with species that can intermix ending with the human lead ending up with another human.
+ I didn’t like that everyone in the prisons died and especially didn’t like that Jarret and Hollice died off screen at the beginning. I was expecting them and the others to show up in the prison. :( I feel like the only reason they and Sh’quo company were killed off was so Torin could retire from service believably at the end. Meh.
