Black Panther Review
Feb. 17th, 2018 06:03 pmI really enjoyed it.
+ The women in this movie were amazing. This movie felt more like an ensemble film and they were a big part of that. All of them got some great moments and I love that they clearly had important relationships between them.
+ That short scene between Okoye and Nakia where they realise they aren't on the same side - that while they feel a similar anger and grief and both have Wakanda as their priority they see their duty differently - was one of my favourite moments.
+ I love the entire concept of the Dora Milaje and they were excellent. I love their look. The fight with Erik, especially the part where they get him trapped in their spears, was excellent.
+ I loved Okoye. She was my favourite character. Competent badass, unwavering devotion to her duty, sense of humour, just generally the best. Also I love that she's a general.
+ Shuri was a snarky delight and her relationship with her brother was adorable. Everything about her and them was wonderful. She added a great lightness to the movie.
+ Erik was an excellent villain. His story reminded me very much of Loki (and Magneto) in that he does horrible things and plans to do some genuinely awful things and yet he's still deeply sympathetic. You see why he thinks like he does, you understand why he wants what he does even as you're going "oh no, that's not the way to go about this'. I was so sad when he was killed off. [Though his last line was pretty killer.]
+ I wish we'd gotten more scenes between T'Challa and Erik that weren't just fighting. I also think a scene between Erik and Nakia could have been really interesting because Erik's a very extreme version of her and I would have liked to have seen how that conversation would go.
+ I loved the mix of tradition and technology in Wakanda. The fashions were great and I loved the different look for each of the tribes.
+ There's this one ship that looks like a dragonfly that I loved. The remote access tech and the sand table were both really cool.
+ I really loved the South Korea fight and car chase sequence and it was my favourite fight of the movie. Okoye was awesome**, Nakia still in her seat after the crash was hilarious, I loved them leaving T'Challa behind trusting that he'd catch up, Shuri excitedly driving the car was great and I seriously continue to love how T'Challa moves as the Black Panther. The whole sequence was really badass and so much fun.
** Like, in every way, but specifically that moment when Okoye calls T'Challa a showoff before climbing onto the roof of the car to throw her spear to stop the bad guy's car was the best. And then she manages to save herself when her car explodes and it was great. I love her so much.
+ I loved the whole challenge sequence. Visually it was stunning. It also worked as a rote tradition during a change-over in power where no one is actually expecting a challenge to kingship.
+ One thing that didn't work for me was Erik being able to come in, regardless of heritage, to challenge T'Challa after the ceremony and get control of the country. During the ceremony, sure, but anything after that seems like a badly thought out thing to allow.
+ I liked M'Baku's little background plotline from challenging for kingship to coming to the rescue and finally having a place on the council for his people by the end.
+ I loved Okoye stepping between M'Baku and W'Kabi's war rhino. I couldn't tell if W'Kabi stopped it before it hit Okoye or if the rhino stopped itself because it knows/loves Okoye. Either way she didn't flinch, didn't doubt for a second that it would stop. I loved it licking her cheek, that was adorable. I loved how absolutely uncompromising she was with W'Kabi.
+ I love how much fun Klaue was having pretty much every second he was on screen. I enjoy that in a villain.
