Rizzoli & Isles 1x09 Review

I loved this episode. The show got off to a shaky start and I wasn’t even certain I was going to continue to watch it but I’ve actually been really enjoying it. Why couldn’t it have been one of the fall cop dramas and gotten a full 22 episode season? Ten episodes isn’t near enough especially considering that a) that means there is only one more episode left until next summer, and b) the last two episodes were amazing and it feels like the show is really hitting its stride now. Or alternatively couldn’t it have done what White Collar is doing and did a second part to the season in January with say another 10 episodes? That would have been awesome. I suppose I should just be happy that it’s getting (a slightly longer) second season. If it had been a fall show it’s very likely it would have been cancelled four episodes in.
• I love Jane and Maura, and Jane/Maura (who by the way I am shipping like crazy at this point), so much. They are just so wonderful together and almost all their scenes together are gold in some way. I loved Jane holding one of Maura’s hands in her own as she tried to convince her that her biological family being criminals didn’t mean anything about her. I love that Jane can make Maura laugh even when she’s really upset. I loved Jane ‘defending a stone cold killer’ inadvertently to help Maura. I love Jane freaking out when Maura disappeared and her ‘whatever you want I can get it’ as soon as she picked up the phone (and after this episode I buy that whatever a kidnapper asked of her she really would have got it.) I once again got the feeling of Maura being Jane’s girlfriend, which I am completely all for. I hope the show keeps it up.
• “You’re the same ridiculously smart, amazing, goofy person that you were before.” – Jane. Awwww. Jane thinks Maura is amazing, and goofy (aw!). I loved Maura’s soft smile at this.
• Jane being willing to do anything to protect Maura – her willingness to give up a name to a hired killer to basically murder someone in order to protect Maura – made me so gleeful. So, okay, it’s wrong especially since she’s a cop but I was still flailing in happiness. And that was just when Jane was immediately all for taking Patrick Doyle up on his request after Maura explained it to her. At the time I was considering the possibility that Jane was testing Maura by being so obviously for it in order to gauge her reaction. But nope, Jane was just being really practical and completely focused on how best to protect Maura. So when she actually did it – I was really pleased.
• “You do what you need to do to protect family.” – Korsak. The fact that Korsak and Frost were also a part of it surprised me and took me aback. I actually wasn’t completely pleased about it. I have to really wonder about Jane bringing them into something like that when she didn’t actually have to. I mean this wouldn’t only mean an end to their career’s if discovered but also probable jail time, not to mention that it does make them all ‘dirty’ cops to a degree. I wouldn’t have thought Jane would involve them. So in that final scene you’d have the guys not at all moved the bad guy’s murder while there’d be an undercurrent between the girls about what Jane did for her.
That said Korsak’s line sold me on it. This is not unexpected since I love ‘made’ families that will do anything for each other. I’ve loved how close knit these four people have been becoming over the season, and while this might be a little fast, I love how it pretty much bonds them all together, tightly and permanently (in blood!) I do wish we could have seen the scene where Korsak and Frost both learned the truth about Maura.
• We finally have a tie-in from the show to the credits which feature very Irish music without seemingly any of the cast being Irish.
• I really liked all of Maura’s scenes about her dealing with her unexpected family. How horrifying for her to find her unknown half-brother on her table. Oh, Maura. I especially loved her scene with her biological father. I love that he loves, has always loved, Maura. I hope we see him again. The show has slowly been making things move even between the women but it’s still more Jane focused so I was glad to see Maura getting a lot of attention.
• I am very intrigued with whom Maura’s biological mother is and I get the feeling that we’re supposed to be. I really want to know who she is. Going by what Patrick said about her I’m wondering if she wasn’t the daughter of a cop/lawyer or a cop/lawyer herself?
