The Blacklist 5x19 Thoughts
Jun. 16th, 2018 06:40 pmIan Garvey [No. 13]: Conclusion
+ Dembe had two moments I loved. First, him sitting in the foreground during the first scene, casually reading the paper and completely ignoring Red and Liz's usual drama amused me so much. Second, Dembe and Red playing games is always delightful. I also loved Dembe speaking up for Liz.
+ I don't believe for a second that Liz would have shot Red. As soon as Garvey shoots Red she turns on him. She doesn't try to stop Dembe when he pulls Lilly away. There is no way she would have shot Red and by the defeated look when she lowered her gun she knew it too.
+ I found it a little off that Liz went straight to Garvey and didn't check on Red sooner. She couldn't have known how bad Red's wound was or wasn't. It bothered me.
+ This episode was all about Liz acting irrationally and... it actually worked for me? It didn't annoy me at all. That destroyed monologue at Red showed just how much Liz has been internalising her feelings this season. Sure, she's shown her anger at Red but she's never let it consume her or even let it affect their relationship. But she is hurting hard, she blames Red and is angry and this was her finally lashing out.
+ The fact that Liz shot Garvey 3 times, even though she didn't need to, even though she desperately wants the truth about the dufflebag, shows that a part of her really wanted revenge even more. One shot would have been enough to take him down. ETA: okay, actually I watched the scene again and it looks like Dembe also shot Garvey. It makes sense, of course he would. Not sure who shot once and who shot twice because it goes too fast.
+ My biggest issue was when Liz burst into the room. Why not earlier when he was all 'I'll tell you later', or wait a few seconds more to see if he would spill something since he was talking? Did she simply lose patience now that she had him in her sights and couldn't stay back anymore, or perhaps Aram got a hold of her and told her Red was on his way? I wish we'd see an indication of the latter because it would so much more sense.
+ I loved the look Lilly gave Liz when she said she didn't care that Garvey hadn't killed Mosadek. It reminded me of pilot Liz who would have been just as appalled at someone so blithely not caring about setting someone up. Liz has changed so much.
+ I liked the twist that it was Garvey that Red had doubled. That all played out well.
+ If both Lilly and Liz are Red's daughters I have to give props to the casting director because in that shot of them standing together at the hospital I totally bought it.
+ Despite the looks similarity I don't buy that Red is the father of either of them. What Garvey said to Lilly about how her life was a lie and that she had no reason to hide really makes me think that Red isn't her father. I mean, it's a lie that Red would have hurt her and she needed to hide from him but that's not something Garvey would think, so it's more support that he's not the original Raymond Reddington. Also the way Red looks at her when he realises that she's Jennifer... I just don't buy that she really is his daughter. He doesn't care enough. I mean she's clearly not a random person and he doesn't want her hurt but she's also not special to him. Liz is special to him, we've seen many examples of what that looks like, but I still really don't buy that she's his daughter.
+ So was Garvey's interest in Red all about Lilly all this time? Like, he was the agent put in charge of her and her mom, bonded deeply with them, kept up a relationship with at least Lilly her entire life and then thus he was actually trying to protect Lilly this entire time? Huh. Also if true it acts as a mirror to Red and Liz, though Garvey is crueler than Red has ever been, and hopefully Red won't share his fate.
