Person of Interest 5x10 Thoughts
Sep. 24th, 2018 11:13 pmIt’s been over 2 years since I last watched this show. I got spoiled on a couple important points in the final episodes, and decided to take a short break at the relatively happy place we left all the characters in in 5x09. I intended it to only be for a couple weeks but it lasted a lot longer than expected!
The Day the World Went Away
+ Root D: I knew Root's death was coming but I was hoping it would be closer to the finale. I should have known with all her talk this episode about them all living as long as the Machine lived and her warnings that they were going to die if they didn't change how they chose to act. I did find her actual death rather - anticlimatic? I was expecting for her to go out in a blaze of glory (like Shaw did) or dying to save one of the others (...like Shaw did). But her actual death happening off-screen... eh? I wish she could have at least died with one of her made-family with her and not alone like she was for so much of her life. Having two years to come to terms with her inevitable death absolutely affected my reaction to finally seeing it. Possibly the lack of impact I felt is entirely down to that since I did my mourning for her already.
+ "I think it was warning us what he might do to them." I am so here for this! Bring me all of Dark Finch. I want him to be scary and rain down death and destruction on Samaritan. I loved the way he said "I have played by the rules for so long." and his slow head shake. Michael Emerson is so good at going dark and I really want the show to embrace that.
+ Elias's death D: I didn't know it was coming but a part of me knew that he wouldn't make it out of the season alive. I love that he died how he wanted - fighting, protecting his friend. I loved Finch's reaction, that even though he was clearly dead Finch still went to his body, how he couldn't look away even as he was dragged away and how upset he was. Their relationship had come so far. "And one guy who Elias respected." and in the end Finch respected and cared for him too.
+ "I trust you, Harold. I walked in darkness for a very long time until you guided me to light. And I wouldn't change any of it." - Root. ♥ I do really appreciate how much of this episode was given over to Finch/Root. I really enjoyed them all episode. Root's love for Finch makes me happy. I loved her calling him the "architect of the future".
+ It feels appropriate that at the end we would have Finch's cover being blown. He has spent so long hiding and running. I love that in the end it's his love and desire to help/protect a friend that has him giving himself up to the police.
+ "She's your child." - Root. I always love any mention of a familial relationship between Finch/Machine and that Finch didn't protest this designation at all was great.
+ Aww, Finch wanted the Machine to pick her own name. I loved Root's change in expression. She thought she understood that choice of Finch's and he surprised her.
+ I love that as soon as Finch is a target Reese wants to go on the offensive.
+ We didn't get much Finch/Reese at all but I liked this exchange:
"I wish you wouldn't do this on my account."
"I'm just protecting a Number, Harold. That's what you hired me to do."
+ I love that Finch immediately called to tell Shaw it wasn't her fault as soon as he realised his mistake.
+ "This is maybe the first time I've felt like I belong." - Root. I loved her entwining her fingers with Shaw but not last kiss for them? Boo.
+ I liked Reese closing Elias's eyes.
+ "And darling you've got a great shape." - Root. ♥ I love their flirting and kicking ass together. I love Shaw's smile at her.
+ I'm honestly shocked Root left Shaw behind and I'm not sure that I entirely buy it. Not after Root just got Shaw back, not even with Shaw ordering her to, not even for Finch.
+ "You can patch me up when we get back to the subway. We've had plenty of practice with John." - Root. Heh. She's not wrong. Poor John.
+ Really loved Finch getting the gun for Root and her taking out the car following them, while driving, and her disdainful "amateurs". Everything about that was delightful.
+ Finch losing himself in apathy and lost hope was sad to see.
+ The Machine choosing Root's voice is clearly the only right choice.
+ I loved Finch hearing Root's voice and for the slightest moment clearly having this tenuous hope, even though I think he already knew she was dead, and the gut punch of the truth.
+ "You created me. I can do anything you want me to." Possibly the scariest moment because Finch locked the Machine away not because he was truly that afraid of her but because he was that afraid of himself, and knew exactly the inner darkness he had inside. I am very interested to see what the two of them can do working together.
+ I liked Reese not even having to say anything, that Shaw knew just based on his expression.
+ "We need to get to Finch." - Shaw. I loved this. Shaw is clearly in shock and Root's death is devastating but she's moving forward and concentrating on protecting the people she has left.
