Chuck Versus the Suitcase

This was a very adorable and fun episode. There were several times it hit my embarrassment squick – I couldn’t watch the fight between Sarah and Sophia after it went onto the runway, for example – but overall I found it amusing and cute.

• Chuck/Sarah were adorable and I loved their bickering and being partners and being together. The ‘spider-man kiss’ scene was delightful. Being a couple is really working well thus far.

• Morgan’s little explanation/rundown on the problem with the new Buy More to Beckman was hilarious, as was Morgan and Casey tracking down Jeffster and tranking them. I really liked the Morgan/Casey talk and Morgan convincing Casey to contact Alex.

• Chuck and Sarah’s reactions when they saw Casey and Morgan wheeling unconscious Jeffster into the apartment behind oblivious Devon’s back made me giggle.

• Devon/Ellie were cute and sweet.

• Isaiah Mustafa was an excellent Greta, very fun, and it’s really too bad he had to go. He could have been an excellent addition to the cast (Grimes could have a new man crush and Casey could be all disgruntled!)

• After the last episode’s weird lack of visual fighting it was really nice to get some in this episode even if I had to skip most of the main one. Chuck’s ‘fight’ with Lou Ferrigno’s character was less a ‘cool’ fight and more really funny but I still enjoyed it.

• The main issue I had was the reason for Devon going completely overboard – because of the missing Bartowski mom and how Devon doesn’t want her to feel like she’s missing something. I think TPTB made a small misstep there by having Devon single out Ellie missing her mother. It feels like it was brought up only because this season is about their mother’s return. Instead it would have worked so much better if Devon had been trying to make up for Ellie’s missing parents and trying to fill the spaces they would have. I mean her dad died right in front of her not very long ago and it just felt very strange for his existence to be ignored to concentrate solely on the mother that, as far as they know, abandoned the Bartowski siblings when they were kids. It should have been about Ellie missing her parents – her father who disappeared and then died after she found him again, her mother who abandoned her – and I think that would have made Ellie looking at the old family album of the entire family just work that little bit better.

• Another, small, issue was Chuck needing to ask what Smart Bullets were, when that really should have been something he’d know.

• As far as I can tell all the female CIA Buy More employees wear skirts which annoys me.

• I really liked the explanation for why they brought Jeff and Lester back which had been something I thought for sure would be really contrived. I mean, it kind of is – they’re spies, I’m sure they know how to be inefficient if needed – but overall good.

• It was rather strange to have another person in Castle – random blonde female and dark-haired male spy working in the background while our gang get their briefing at the beginning of the episode, specifically. I wonder if Sarah and Casey liked having so many other spies around, working both in the Buy More and in the Castle, and if they knew any of them? There could have been a storyline there. So General Beckman appeared to leave at the end of the episode as did a lot of the other spies working at the Buy More. Are they all, minus ‘Greta’ who I know is a reoccurring character, reassigned and actually gone, or are they still in Burbank? The government did foot the bill and upgraded the store and Castle and Beckman does call it a ‘CIA base’ so I’m assuming that most of the spies are going to stick around – some still working at the Buy More, others with different covers, and all with access to Castle. I do think that it has to be clear that there are multiple spies working at the Buy More still because it is a CIA base and it’s full of a lot of weapons and hidden spy stuff. I can just see the future hijinks of Jeffster finding a hidden stash of some spy things.

• While I love General Beckman her actually being in Burbank, and playing Buy More manager at that, felt too weird and off to me so I’m glad that it was only temporary and she’s going back to DC.

• Morgan being made manager of the Buy More made me very happy for him and worked for me. Morgan being made manager of Spy Buy More the CIA Base didn’t work quite so well. He may know about the spy business but he’s not actually a spy.
