Heartbreaker

“I almost got myself killed for you last night.” – Alek
“And you think that earns you what? Me?” – Chloe

Awesome! Sometimes this show surprises me. He can save her life daily and almost die for her all he wants and none of it will ever require or obligate her to love him in return. That’s not how it works. I loved Chloe calling him on that.

• I actually really liked the Chloe/Alek this episode even if during that above scene he was treading dangerously close to being a Nice Guy. I liked that he sulked for awhile and then got back to protecting her. I really liked their discussion on the roof. He was non-pushy, non-judgement and supportive. He opened up and told her something very personal as a means to make sure she understood the dangers of truth telling but didn’t push her either way on what choice she should make. I really liked that. I also liked their scene after he beats up the crooked cop. It was amusing and sweet. See:

“So a fresh start than. Maybe on a night when one or both of us hasn’t almost been killed.” – Chloe
“I don’t know if I can work within those kinds of crazy restrictions.” – Alek

I found that charming and cute. I also liked Chloe clearing things up – she isn’t ready to enter a relationship with him because of many issues including him caring for her more and wanted more from her than she’s ready to give. Except then she muddles the water. The idea of a fresh start in itself is okay especially with what she said except then she kissed him. On the side of the mouth. Because that isn’t a mixed signal or at the least crossing a line. He cares for her so much more and if she isn’t ready for more than she really needs to keep her lips to herself.

• Chloe texting Alek when in trouble didn’t have the weight to it that I think he wanted to imply. The way the implication would work in this situation is if Chloe were picking between two love interests, and thus her choosing Alek would have meaning. But of course she wasn’t going to turn to human Brian for help from armed intruders. The only other person she could logically have texted would have been Jasmine. In that way it is interesting that she chose Alek even with the issues they were having. If there had been a lack of trust recently between Chloe and Alek Chloe choosing to trust him to save her over Jasmine could also have made sense. But again no, it doesn’t work. Maybe I’m over-thinking. He could have just been pointing out another way in which Brian is unsuitable for her.

• I really haven’t understood why Chloe didn’t tell her mother the truth. They were so close it didn’t make sense to me. And for most of the episode her keeping the secret continued not to work for me. Paul’s reason – it’s what superheroes do – makes no sense in this situation because Chloe doesn’t have a ‘secret’ identity and her bad guys know exactly who she is. So Meredith not knowing in no way keeps her safe and in fact could put her in danger. Alek’s in-put worked better because for the first time I really got the sense that Chloe was afraid of her mother’s reaction. While he was very neutral in what he said I can see that scaring her into not telling the truth. I just wish we’d had that talk a couple episodes back.

• I love the Meredith/Chloe relationship still and this episode certainly put them through the ringer. For the first time they were not communicating well, fighting, and finding themselves separated. It was interesting to watch. I really liked their talk at the end.

• I found myself wondering if Jasmine likes Alec romantically after this episode. Her behaviour could just be about loving Alek platonicly and wanting to protect him (because she knows how much he likes Chloe) but it felt like something more.

• When Meredith went into her room at the end, locked the door and then brought out a box I thought for sure there was going to be a big reveal. That Meredith had a big secret – perhaps that she knew that Chloe was Mai. That would have been a very cool reveal. Instead it appears that she’s going to be trying to contact her husband and keeping that from Chloe which is kind of boring.

• So the bookends of the episode – starts with Brian catching Chloe and Alek kissing and ends with Alek watching Chloe and Brian talking – not really the same weight to them. It felt like it was supposed to be Alek ‘catching’ Chloe but it left me going ‘they’re not even touching and they’re not talking about their relationship so...?’ Hmm. I suppose in the way Brian ‘realised’ with the kiss that there was something going on between Chloe/Alek and the final scene is Alek realising that Chloe isn’t over Brian nor has their relationship completely ended. Despite her breaking up with Brian and despite her stated desire to start over with Alek Brian is still a threat to Alek having a romantic relationship with Chloe.
