The last Act I watched in my re-watch, Act 27, was all the way back on October 23 of last year! Wow. I don’t even remember why I didn’t keep watching but I almost went another year without finishing this series. Sigh. I am determined to finish it this month. No more watching a bit then leaving it for a year or two, only to have to re-watch to continue watching. It’s completely ridiculous. It’s especially ridiculous considering how much I love Sailor Moon, and how much I am truly enjoying this series.

Welcome Back, Ami!

Awards

Cutest Moment: I suppose the Makoto/Rei scene where Makoto learns to her delight that Venus is Minako. Makoto scowling at Rei when Rei defensively says that she ‘thought it best if only she knew’, Rei responding with “I get it!” before stalking off and then Makoto grinning and musing that ‘Luna isn’t the only one that’s changed.’

Saddest Moment: Ami confessing that she doesn’t trust the other senshi. That before their capture they were falling apart and “It seemed like we weren’t friends at all.” and that while she tried to believe it would return to normal she secretly thought it was hopeless. It brought to mind the fact that these are Ami’s first friendships and how it must have felt to watch it all slip away. It made all those times where she sat alone seemingly content that things would be fine all the sadder.

WTF of the Week: There were a couple of things that have bugged me before like Makoto and Rei not transforming when they knew they were heading into battle (Jupiter/Mars searching for Usagi/Ami and the portal to the Dark Kingdom makes a lot more sense than Makoto/Rei doing it) and Mercury flinching but not moving out of the way of Kunzites’s sword but the definitive WTF of the week has to be Luna falling asleep in the middle of the senshi meeting. With their princess and a fellow senshi kidnapped by their enemies and a course of action not yet decided she falls asleep. Are you kidding me?! And then she disappears for the rest of the episode and has nothing to do with getting them back. The whole thing is just horrible and ridiculous and felt like Luna character assassination.

Coolest Moment: Oh, let’s just go with the Moonlight Attractive Attack. It was kind of stupid but I liked that it was a team attack, I loved the planets and moon that appeared behind each girl, and I was getting strong feelings of familiarity watching it. I’m sure it’s from the anime (the feeling not the attack) but I can’t think of where. The R movie? I love them working as a team. I think this might actually be the first time with all five of them working together as Senshi.

Best Senshi Moment: Hmm, I’ll say Usagi – her pushing, prodding and unwavering support of Ami throughout the episode was wonderful.

Best Senshi Interaction: I really loved the final bit with the four of them standing together with these huge grins on their faces, holding each other and laughing, so happy to be together again; and a short distance away Venus stands, smiling and watching over them. It went on longer than I thought it would, all through the credits, and it was lovely. I loved how it ended with a freeze frame of Venus in the foreground watching the huddle of senshi in the background. It was kind of sad (Venus being apart) but very pretty.

Runner-up: Usagi/Ami’s interactions. I loved Ami petting an unconscious Usagi’s hair.

“If I did that to Usagi-chan... then I must have done terrible things to everyone.” – Ami. I love Ami using how she treated Usagi as a barometer of how horrible she’s been. If she could do something so bad to Usagi than what she did to everyone else must have been even worse.

• Luna not telling the other girls about the true meeting because she was afraid that Ami wouldn’t show up and this was their chance to get her back… still doesn’t make sense to me. Luna knows now that Usagi is Princess Serenity and the senshi’s main mission in life is to protect her. If she didn’t know that I could buy her using Usagi in an attempted to save Ami but she does know and so I just don’t. I can’t buy that Luna would put their princess at risk like that. Plus she didn’t even call the girls after Ami showed up so it still doesn't work as an explanation. I think turning into a child has addled her brains or at least her reasoning abilities.

• I was not pleased with how Luna and Artemis were depicted in this episode. Specifically that Luna was shown to be so incompetent and idiotic while Artemis was shown as smart and competent. Not only did Luna lose their princess but then she fell asleep and had nothing to do with retrieving her whereas Artemis, somehow, managed to show them what they needed to do. It was annoying. It’s especially annoying considering that Luna states at the beginning of the episode that she now remembers everything. My first thought upon hearing that was that I’d believe it when I saw it and it appears to have been the right response. There is no way I believe Luna remembers everything. After human Luna falls asleep Rei states that ‘at least a part of her is cat-like’ but as an explanation it makes no sense. Luna is in actuality a cat and while in this series she has on occasion acted in a cat like manner (playing with yarn) she has never fallen asleep during a Senshi meeting. For them to blame it on human Luna having cat-like qualities and weaknesses just does not fly with me. It would work better if they blamed it all on her human form (not her original form, mind) being a child instead.

• I loved Venus showing up at the end and I really liked Artemis working with the other senshi. I want Venus and Artemis to become more integrated with the other Senshi so this felt like a start.

• I loved Nephrite saving Mercury and how that’s been subtly built up to over the last half dozen acts or so. I loved the look they shared before he disappeared. He told Kunzite the reason was because he wanted to get in his way bit I don’t buy it. At the least he was paying Ami back for the ‘kindness’ she showed him. I know they won’t have any interactions any time soon but I hope this will come up again before the end of the series. This is definitely the moment that made me ship them.

• So what are the senshi going to think of Nephrite saving Mercury? No one remarks upon it at the end of the episode but it has to come up later. Or do they all just write it off as quarrelling among the enemy? Except there was that look he gave her before disappearing and she did spend several weeks a bad guy which would be enough to make me really curious.
