Stairway to Heaven

This was actually a really good episode. It actually made me cry twice. First, when they were all saying good-bye to Jackson and then second, when Meredith breaks down outside the prison.

- I loved the Meredith/Cristina/Derek(!) this episode. He actively made two moves to bring Cristina and Meredith together and I loved it. Both times he turned to Cristina which makes me wonder if he’s already broached the subject with Meredith or if they were just moment specific for Cristina. I’m thinking both reasons.

“I know you two are still fighting but isn’t it about time that you wrapped that up? I ask because when I propose to her she’s going to need someone to freak out to. She misses you. A lot. You must miss her too, right? I don’t know what’s going on in your life but you must have something you need to freak out to her about too.” – Derek. I love that Derek went to Cristina, even though he knows that they’re still fighting because Cristina is still Mere’s person. I love that he makes her a part of this because it’s Cristina and she should be a part of it and because he knows Meredith will need her person.

And then at the end when Meredith won’t stop crying and he knows that what she needs is Cristina, that Cristina will be able to help her so that’s who he goes to. I love that when Cristina heard why Meredith was crying she immediately went out to her.

- I am not thrilled about not hearing what they said to each other. At first I thought it was just my tape or the station and the sound had been interrupted but apparently that’s how it was meant. So not pleased about that. We know that Cristina says ‘Okay’ but what does Meredith say to her before that? Does she apologise for her part in the fight (and which part – not standing up for her with Richard or her making Cristina’s choice personal?) or did she tell Cristina about why she went to the execution or about how it felt? What did she say? I really wanted to see that conversation. But I’ll be happy if they’ll just get back to normal.

- Derek with Cristina and Derek trying to mend the break between Meredith and Cristina and Derek being there for Meredith outside the prison were all really wonderful moments. I liked him when he sat down outside Cristina’s and let Cristina comfort Meredith inside his vehicle and them to heal their breaks. But while I understand Derek’s anger about what Meredith did his bitchiness and self-righteousness towards her was really irritating.

- When William told Cristina that he did want to live I was going all ‘WTF’ and wondering if he’d been playing with Meredith and trying to ruin her life, and when he watched Mere and Derek’s fight, whether he was trying to break up their relationship. At the end when he confessed that I was actually feeling a little disappointed because they’ve had very interesting interactions over the past couple episodes and Meredith’s compassion for him gave him death. So when she didn’t believe him, was understanding that death is scary, and he was scared and his face shows that she’s right I was relieved and it kind of made the scene more powerful. I really have loved their interactions. The aforementioned scene as he tries to cover his fear and then asks her to be ‘a friendly face in the crowd’ at his execution, the scene where she asks several times if he was sure that he wanted to die and then that final scene between them. That final scene was rather powerful – him being walked out and searching through the cold faces of his victim’s families until he finds Meredith sitting there watching him back. And he keeps staring at her as he’s strapped in and she has to look away but then looks back and meets his eyes and then he dies. It was a good scene.

- Actually I really liked the final four minutes of the episode – they were fabulous. From William’s execution to Meredith and Derek’s scene outside the prison where Meredith breaks down to Derek turning up at Cristina’s for help for her.

- “I wanted to show him compassion. That’s why I went.” – Meredith. Oh, Mere.

- I didn’t watch Bailey confronting Derek in the OR scenes because they just seemed far to embarrassing. Which speaking of embarrassing Izzie continuing to talk or otherwise interact with Denny in public is kind of horrible. I kind of zipped through the scene where Izzie was tubbing Jackson or whatever and Danny was being a complete bastard. Then after Izzie realises that she’s dying and rushes out the front of the hospital and has her confrontation with Denny I watched the scene but spent a lot of it wincing and shaking my head. Couldn’t she have run out a side door somewhere? Somewhere where people can’t see her acting like a crazy person? Oy.

- So Izzie’s dying. I’ve figured that for awhile, then there were the spoilers about the brain aneurysm so I knew what Denny meant when he was saying he was there for Izzie. I was just surprised that it took Izzie so long to figure it out.

- Okay what is the timeline here? William’s execution was like four days after the bulk of the episode, right? So the execution, Jackson waking up and Meredith and Cristina making up all took place four days after Izzie figured out that she was dying. Hasn’t she said anything yet? Why the hell not? Why wouldn’t she have gone immediately inside and talked to Derek? Or talked to him at home since she’s living with him. Or hell even boyfriend Alex or best friend George?

- Lexie’s little rant to Sadie about how they weren’t friends when she was doing her little babble panic-guilty bit was true but rather harsh. So I liked them making up and becoming friends. It appears Lexie has become Sadie’s ally like she first mentioned as a possibility when she first arrived. I wonder what Meredith is going to think of this?
