Act 33 ‘Ami is Changing Schools?’

Hottie Of the Week: Rei/Mars. No one really stuck out for most of the episode but Mars during the first fight scene was smoking hot.

Best Shibby Moment: The scarf giving scene between him and Usagi was adorable but I’m going to give it to his first scene where Motoki is questioning him on why he’s returned and he can’t seem to stop smiling through-out the whole scene. And Usagi hadn’t even arrived yet. Aw.

Funniest Moment: When Luna chimed in to say she was in (for cake), transformed into her human form and then immediately ignored them all to put lipstick. And then Usagi gave her a dirty look. I was amused. I definitely think her being human is affecting her but at least I’m finding amusement in it now.

Cutest Moment: The Scarf scene. They are so adorable! Usagi being so shy, and Mamoru being so rude but immediately wrapping it around his neck leading them to a giggling fight over the scarf and Usagi inadvertently strangling him.

Saddest Moment: Rei’s fight with her father was pretty horrible. Any time her father was mentioned even obliquely this episode you can see the pain on her face and in her eyes but in this scene she let it all out.

WTF of the Week: Jupiter not making it to the battle because… a sleepy Makoto knocked down a stand of bikes and decided to stay and put them to rights instead of help her friends fight. Wait, what? That’s ridiculous! They could have been fighting for their lives for all she knew! You don’t just chose to not go to a fight! Oy.

Coolest Moment: Mars’s first fight with the youma – from her walking calmly out of the shadows, to the fight itself (which had her simply attacking with no affects) and then the awesome de-henshin effect, which we got again later in the episode.

Best Senshi Moment: Rei/Mars – her being oh so calm and confident and competent during her first fight with the youma was fabulous. I loved it.

Best Senshi Interaction: The opening scene was wonderful and perfect. Luna forbidding it, the girls questioning that Usagi is truly serious and then each of them in turn stating their support of her. I love their smiles and Usagi hugging them and them not doing the yatta cheer with her, again, causing them all to laugh. I love how it's becoming a running joke. And then Luna’s resigned note that at least ‘they’re becoming better a teamwork’ was the perfect end to the scene. Of the various comments Makoto’s teasing “Princesses sure are a lot of trouble.” was my favourite.

- I quite like Ami’s mother. Despite her absence it’s clear that she and Ami are close, have a good relationship and that she loves Ami very much. I also love the casting here because I completely buy her as Ami’s mother.

Act 34 ‘A Mother-and-Daughter Talk’

Awards

Hottie Of the Week: Ami, who was looking lovely.

Best Shibby Moment: The Mamoru/Zoisite scene was excellent. I was very much getting an ‘Endymion’ vibe from him. I loved how casual he was about Zoisite showing up, and I loved him decisively shutting Zoisite down on Usagi (“If you mean Usagi nothing you say will be of any use.”) and changing the subject. He kept control of that entire encounter – just as a prince would.

Funniest Moment: “I have a situation... I don’t want it for screwing around!” I know it’s not meant to come off that way, my translation might not have been the best, but it still makes me giggle.

Cutest Moment: … Makoto bringing the huge bento for Rei and the two of them smiling at each other was pretty sweet. It made me aww.

Saddest Moment: Actually I think this lies with Mrs. Mizuno. I felt so sorry for her several times during the episode. When she was sitting alone in the apartment reading the text Ami sent her and then later looking through all the pictures of Ami as a child. She and Ami have always been so close and now suddenly there’s this distance, and secrets, and Ami pulling away and in those scenes she didn’t even know where Ami was. I wanted to hug her.

WTF of the Week: Jupiter and Moon getting their asses kicked by the one youma. I do not buy it. Slightly less, but only slightly, is the fact that Rei and Ami basically arrive at the same time.

Coolest Moment: The four Senshi joint attacking the youma. Surrounding it, attacking it and easily defeating it. I loved that we saw them just using their abilities (flames, lightning, bubbles) with no power sequence.

Best Senshi Moment: I’m going to give this to Rei. The maturity that she displayed in her scene with her father was pretty impressive. I don’t entirely understand why she forgave him, or at least found it in herself to be willing to start to move forward and away from her anger and bitterness at him, I don’t know that I would, but I was impressed by it all the same.

Best Senshi Interaction: There is one that is obvious but there are two others that I really loved and I don’t feel like picking so there are three choices for this episode:

1) Ami/Rei. They were adorable and wonderful this episode. I loved their party in the Crown room – the dressing each other, the fashion show, the silly string/pillow fight that ended in them collapsing in each other’s arms in laughter. I loved their smiles and their supportiveness of each other. They were wonderful.

2) Makoto/Usagi. They were in the background of this episode but they were so great. I loved their worry about Rei and Ami. I loved the little bit of silent eye communication after Rei turned up at the Crown and Usagi leaving Rei to Makoto, their agreement to protect Rei, Makoto spending the night to watch over them and giving Usagi updates, and Usagi waking with her phone clutched in her hands. They were great this episode too.

3) The four of them at the end. Sailor Moon turning to do a cheer once again and this time, smiling, the other three doing it with her and her joy about it. It’s been built up and the payoff was lovely.

- This episode made me realise that, strangely enough, the one senshi pairing that we are missing the most, excluding most Minako pairings of course, is Usagi/Rei. They were such a huge part of the anime and yet, and it actually feels very weird to say this, but of the relationships between the four of them I think Usagi/Rei is the most undeveloped. I really hope we get an episode devoted to them coming up.
