Lost 5x05 Review
Feb. 18th, 2009 10:49 pmThis Place Is Death
- Ji Yeoh is absolutely adorable. And completely healthy so I wonder what was up with showing Kate a baby picture of her?
- Between the last episode and this one I had pretty much managed to convince myself that it was actually Jack Sun blamed for Jin’s death not Ben so when she went after Ben it was actually a surprise. I was also surprised when Kate (with Aaron) and Sayid all took off.
- Hmm, Egyptian hieroglyphics... that’s new. A temple? Where exactly is it located on the Island? They’re really more Temple ruins... is it larger and more non-ruiny inside?
- I have a hard time buying how Montand’s arm got pulled off. You’d need the same amount of force on both sides in order for that to happen and I just don’t see the human’s having that much force on their side. Also: gross.
- Robert tells Danielle that the smoke monster is a security system for ‘the temple’; I’d always thought it was the Island’s security system. What is the temple? Is it the one that Richard/Ben were talking about last year and where all the Others went to? It didn’t seem very big.
- The situation for Danielle and her team disintegrated really quickly. I guess I’d always gotten the idea that they’d all lived on the Island for awhile before slowly getting sick. (Also that there was more of them.) So them all dying so quickly... and now Danielle’s alone. Does that mean that she had to give birth alone?
- Hmm, the gun misfired... so the Island protected her (or Alex). Also it appears that there probably is some sentience with the flashes considering they happen once again as one of ‘our’ people is about to be shot.
- The Jin/Sawyer reunion = awesome! I loved it. I loved how joyful both of them were to see each other and the huge hug between them. Awww. Now they just need Hurley (and ghost Charlie) and the three (four) musketeers will be back together.
- I found the separation of the Island group interesting. We had the new people off by themselves, and our Islanders on the other side of the steam; Sawyer and Jin talking closely, with Juliet standing near Sawyer and Locke, as ever, being a loner and standing a bit of a distance.
- Why would Korean be the only other language Charlotte speaks? I’m going to have to assume she’s lying for some reason (which considering how much she didn’t want them to know that she spoke Korean I can believe) because it doesn’t make sense to me that of all the languages she’d chose to learn she’d chose only Korean.
- Someone asked in one of the former episode’s forum about why exactly the O6 needed to return since it didn’t seem that the Islander’s were in that much danger; after all being shot at by arrows and running for your life is a common occurrence on the Island. That’s what I was thinking about this episode because we got out answer – the ones on the island are in danger because they, the flashes, are killing them.
- I loved Ben’s little temper-tantrum at Sun and Jack in the car. Hee. And then them being all quiet and sulking.
- How exactly did Charlotte know about the well? Even if she was raised on the Island the well would have been gone before she was old enough to see/know about it. Did someone tell her?
- “You just had to say something.” – Sawyer. Hee. I loved his look at her. My first thought as soon as she said it was ‘she jinxed it’.
- “I just know.” – Locke. We know that Locke takes most everything to do with the Island on faith but I wonder if it’s something more?
- “I promise.” – Locke. But you know there is a loophole here because what did Locke promise exactly? Clearly the jist of it was that Locke isn’t to bring Sun back, however, his last line before he tells Locke to promise isn’t that, it’s ‘don’t bring my baby back’ which could lead to Locke bringing back Sun but not Jin’s baby and thus fulfilling his promise to the letter if not the intent. I definitely don’t think that’s where they’re going – Locke didn’t go and see Sun, afterall – but it was my first thought. That Jin should be more specific.
- I really loved Sawyer being worried about Locke.
- “John. If whatever you are attempting to do works? Thank you.” – Juliet
“You’re welcome.” – Locke, smiles.
♥ Aww. See I knew there were more reasons why I loved Juliet and Sawyer. I loved this little moment. I loved someone for once saying thank you. I loved John’s little shy /pleased smile. I can’t help it when people are nice to Locke it makes me happy.
- I ended saying ‘uh oh’ at the exact same time as Miles did. Heh.
- I loved Sawyer holding the rope steady. I loved Sawyer freaking out at Locke’s ‘death’ and digging desperately in the dirt. I loved Juliet being so gentle with him, as she always is.
- So they killed Charlotte and yet I’m not actually completely sold. Is she dead dead? Why would future Daniel bother to tell little Charlotte not to return if she clearly does and then dies? Just to maintain the timeline? Also it just kind of made me sigh because yet another female character dies.
- Christian Shepherd! Dare I hope Claire is around?
- So Christian says, “I said that you had to move it John.” and then “And since when did listening to him get you anything worth a damn?” and I’m not sure what to take from them but I’m not completely pleased.
One, Ben stated in the finale that whoever moved the Island couldn’t return (though he’s apparently decided this year that that doesn’t apply to him). And John was the one who Christian meant to move the Island. Which means that Christian and whoever he represents (is he Jacob? The Island? Another Avatar?) meant for John to never return to the Island. Dammit. I want ‘leader of the Others’ Locke. Locke more than almost anyone else belongs on the Island and deserves to be there and I don’t like the implication that he doesn’t. It makes me upset. And what does this mean since Ben has stated that John’s body must be returned to the Island as well?
Two, I’m amused by Christian’s... contempt (?) or disdain for Ben. If that’s what I heard in his second sentence. Perhaps it was directed at John for listening to Ben, or perhaps there was no emotional undercurrent there and Christian was simply stating a fact – Locke hasn’t had luck listening to Ben and probably shouldn’t do it.
- So how would things have been changed if Locke had moved the Island like he was supposed to? Would the Oceanic 6 still have made it off the Island? If they had, and Locke had done it, would they have been allowed to stay off the Island? I wonder... it didn’t seem like it at the time (what with the crying and bitterness) but perhaps Ben knew that Locke had been the one meant to move it but he by him doing it he could change things (Alex’s death) and/or he wanted revenge on Widmore and needed to off the Island for that (for some reason) and knew that with the Oceanic 6 off the Island that he’d be able to return by returning with all of them, and thus he chose to move it and on purpose circumventing Jacob’s will?
- “I believe in you John. You can do this.” – Christian. Further manipulation or honesty? I really want to believe the latter, that he truly does believe in John and yet I have this sinking feeling in my stomach that it’s the former. Once again someone manipulating poor Locke for their own reasons (which will inevitably leave Locke worse off than before.) Sigh,
- Locke: Richard said that I’m going to die.
Christian: Well, I suppose that’s – that’s why they call it sacrifice.
Locke: (crying) Alright. Okay. I’m ready.
Oh, Locke. Seriously there had damn well better be a reward for Locke in the future for all the pain he’s had to go through.
- So Christian being unable to help Locke – a) because he’s not actually physical and thus can’t help him, or b) he’s a bastard? I would believe either one actually. And he is not incorporeal since he’s touched Vincent, held Aaron and rocked the rocking chair. Which means he’s being a dick. Unless by him not being able to help John it’s some sort of metaphysical thing wherein John has to do it alone?
- I guess we see why things are flashing – Ben broke the wheel!
- Locke is able to move the wheel pretty easily once it’s back on track, as opposed to how difficult a time Ben had it in the finale. Is that because Locke was meant to move it or because Ben loosened it already?
- Okay, see here’s the thing. I think I’ve uncovered a large part of the reason why I love John and am on his side even when he’s being crazy, insane guy (because even though they mean the same thing sometimes he needs it to be said twice) and that is because John Locke is a puppy. Seriously. He’s all big eyes and faith in people, and when people hit him he yelps away uncomprehending but always comes back even when they do it again until he’s pushed into biting back but even then he’ll still try and come back to you and his bite is mean or cruel or vicious. He’s forgiving to a ridiculous degree; trusting, loyal, faithful. He’s easily lead – if his ‘master’ or someone he has faith in tells him to do something then he does it. (Killing Naomi, leaving the Island, dying in the future). He just wants someone to follow, or someplace where he’ll be loved. Seriously he just reminds me of an abused dog and it’s no wonder that I just want to hold him and make everything better for him. That when people are mean to him I get irritated/angry with them, and when they’re nice I’m happy. I want him to be happy and accepted. For all the crap he’s put up with
- So if Locke moving the wheel stops the flashes then does that mean that the Losties will be back in their own time? But then what about the flashback scene that was the very first scene in the season which showed Daniel (and I assume his entire group) back at the beginnings of Dharma on the Island? But if in that final flash they ended up in a Dharma time then how is that going to work with the returning Oceanic 6? I mean obviously they aren’t going to live on the Island and age through the years so how would they sync back up with the Oceanic 6?
- Ha! I loved Ben’s expression. I don’t think Ben knew that Eloise was Daniel’s mother. Heh.
