Vampire Diaries Thought
May. 4th, 2011 11:16 amA couple thoughts about the original Petrova and the Petrova family line.
- I’ve been thinking about the original Petrova, the woman that Katherine and Elena are doppelgangers of, and her place in the mythology of this show. Who was she? What was she? One of my wishes is that when we learn more about the original Petrova we learn that there was something special or otherwise different about her and her family line, or perhaps specifically the women of that line, whether it’s that they’re a different supernatural creature or perhaps because of the spell that used on the original Petrova.
The Petrova women we’ve seen seem to be special; to have this ability to draw people, especially men, to them. Katherine is a master at getting men to fall for her – Elijah, Trevor, Stefan and Damon, Mason, other one-off characters (like the guy who let her out of the tomb) but also at gaining the allegiance of others like Pearl, Emily, Lucy and Isobel (...until she betrays them). Elena seems to be following a similar pattern. Matt, Stefan, Damon love her, Elijah is already strongly drawn to her and she has the love and allegiance of most of the cast. (Of course most of them are her family and close friends but I think it still works as part of a pattern.) Even Isobel fits this pattern: John was in love with her for his entire life, Alaric loved her and probably would have continued to want her if she hadn’t compelled him, and Damon, even while still in his dangerous ‘I-don’t-care’ phase, still found her special enough to be drawn to her and turn her at her request (and without even knowing her connection to Katherine). I would love to learn that there is actually a reason why the Petrova’s attract people to them. (I admit a part of this is the desire for Elena to be special beyond being the doppelganger. Or that being the doppelganger ends up being about more than just appearances.)
- I’ve read some speculation about who exactly the Original Petrova was and a lot of people seem to think she was perhaps the Original’s mother/sister but Elijah’s reaction/attachment seemed more romantic to me. But while I was thinking about it I came up with an idea I love: What if the Original Petrova was the original vampire? We have gotten no explanation yet for how the Originals became vampires, just that they were a human family who became the first vampires. So what if they were all turned by the very first vampire who just happened to be the Original Petrova? Or perhaps she was a different being that inadvertently turned them into vampires. I think that could be very cool. Original Petrova as the Original Vampire is an idea that makes me happy.
Another possibility for the Original Petrova is that she was a witch who used her powers to turn the original family, accidentally or on purpose, into vampires.
- It seems obvious that the Original Petrova is dead regardless of who or what she was but what if she wasn’t? I vaguely remember that in a previous review I wonder about the idea of Klaus having someone behind him pulling the strings. That thought started because of the way that male characters on this show almost always seem to be revealed to be working for/controlled by/motivated by a female character and how I would love if it turned out that Klaus fit in to this pattern as well.
