I liked it.
+ I'm sad Zayanna died because while she did try and kill Irene it wasn’t malicious and was simply her working within her nature. Her genuinely caring for Irene was proven true by the fact that she gave her life saving Irene.
+ That short exchange with Zayanna’s “forced” laugh and deprecating “I’m a frivolous self obsessed mayfly” made me know that there was more to her and I wanted it see it.
+ I continue to like Kai and his possessiveness and protectiveness of Irene that manages to coincide with trusting and letting her take the lead as well.
+ I like that Vale seems to have an equal friendship with both Irene and Kai.
+ I like Irene’s quick-thinking and the ways that she manages to combat Alberich.
+ I liked the set pieces of this book – the werewolves, the world with Catherine the Great, Alberich’s library.
The Lost Plot
I enjoyed it.
+ I liked getting to see more of the dragons.
+ Irene going undercover as a mob boss was fun and I enjoyed her fluttering like a butterfly through New York getting into and out of trouble.
+ I love that Irene has now started to get a Reputation. She is known, and every book only serves to make her more infamous.
+ I like the twist at the end of Kai being forced to renounce his place in the Library and that they are now going forward as equals. I like the hint of bittersweet future-angst that now hangs over their relationship. I loved the kiss in Vale’s apartment with Vale casually working in the background.
+ I do wish there had been more of a reaction from Kai to Irene’s arrival. We were very much in her head with her relief at seeing him again but for him the last time he saw her was when she got shot and almost died! His relief and possessiveness should have been overwhelming and I didn’t get that.
+ The last mention of Evariste implied we might not see him again which surprised me. I thought he might end up as Irene’s new assistant.
