I enjoyed this series overall. The first half dozen or so episodes were very fun and amusing and the last two went back to that feel (and were two of the best of the series.) The middle of the series though was a bit too angsty and I often found myself wishing it would return to being a rom-com. I felt like the ‘will she be princess’ part of the story was drawn out too long and I would have liked if it been wrapped up within the first eight or nine episodes. The whole empress satchel situation could have been dropped entirely.

I wish that the series had spent more time exploring Seol being a princess – the politics of it, her relationships with her court ladies and her trying to figure out how to be a princess. I also would have found it far more interesting if the series had spent the second half exploring Seol’s life after becoming the princess. Especially because I enjoyed watching confident princess Seol more than the uncertain, angsty and somewhat ineffectual Seol that dominated most of the series. Her growing confidence and competency as well as the difficulties that her being the princess caused in her relationship with Hae Young would have been much more enjoyable to watch.

• I noticed an interesting use of colour in clothing in these latter episodes. When Seol confronts Dan during the empress satchel situation in episode 12 she is wearing all black while Dan is wearing all white. The court ladies change from black uniforms to white uniforms in episode 14 just as Seol finally really accepts her role as princess and beginning to act it. Signalling their change in allegiance? Then we have Seol wearing a lot of white and light coloured clothing once she’s accepted her place as princess.

Episode 12

• I loved Mi So trying to prevent Seon from leaving and that she then went looking for Hae Young. I loved her and Geon trying to help her by dealing with the rumours and negative stuff being said about her online.

“It must make you jealous, that I’m with both of the men you refused to let go of.” – Seol. Yes! I loved Seol getting in some of her own punches after so many episodes of Yoon Ju being a bitch to her and pushing her around.

Episode 14

• Hae Young calling Seol’s friends over was really sweet and considerate.

“So get out of my palace.” Seol confronting Yoon Ju, and basically slapping her down hard, has been a long time in coming. Her firing Yoon Ju as museum director was very satisfying.

• I loved that when Seol went to confront Yoon Ju for once she had an entourage of the court ladies (2) and guards (2). Finally!

• I’m really enjoying Seol throwing herself into being the princess. I wish we had gotten this Seol sooner. Her list of famous people she wanted as teachers made me laugh – she was just so earnest about it.

Episode 15

This entire episode was so adorable and fun. It was definitely one of the best episodes of the series.

• Seol and Hae Young were delightful.

- Their reunion was so adorable. I loved her trying to be mad but just unable to keep it up because she was so happy to see him. I loved her jumping him in joy. I loved the way they couldn’t stop looking at each other.

- Hae Young dragging out the reason why he hadn’t yet signed over his inheritance and using it to tease Seol was so much fun. I loved how much fun he was having. The oppa conversation was wonderful. I loved Seol deciding to make him suffer as well by pretending to go on a blind date.

- Hae Young teaching Seol to drive was fun and cute. I loved him ‘accepting his punishment’ by kissing her and when she questions the suitability of that as a punishment he agrees to ‘take it back’ and then rescinds his kiss by giving her another one. Adorable!

• When Hae Young had Seol close her eyes and breathe deeply during the vote I thought for a second he was going to pull out a wedding ring and propose.

Episode 16

This episode was really good.

• I loved Seol. She was so much more confident and self-possessed. I loved getting to see her in her role as princess and how well she suits it. I really wish we’d had this Seol for more of the drama.

• I liked the continuing gag about Seol being a terrible driver but her biking to school while her guards ran after her bugged me. I kept wondering things like – if she still lives at the palace isn’t that a long way to bike/run, and why don’t her guards just get bikes if this is a regular occurrence and shouldn’t she be driven to school?

• I like that Seol went back to school and was determined to finish her degree.

• I really liked the Seol/Dan scene. I liked Seol finally confronting Dan, and not backing down. I loved the fight because they have never felt more like sisters than during it. I also really liked how the storyline was resolved in a very realistic way – it wasn’t just immediate forgiveness and hugs and kisses.

“I guess you can’t handle me anymore.” – Seol. Confident Seol facing Yoon Ju was excellent. I even liked her having to turn to Yoon Ju for help later in the episode because of how it showed how competent she’d become at being the princess.

• Yoon Ju/Jung Woo leave me meh. He’s so nice and she’s – really not. I can’t remember a secondary female so unlikable. And she was really horrible to him!

• Mi So was excellent and I love that Seol and Mi So have apparently become best friends. The scene with Seol fake crying and Mi So encouraging her was hilarious.

“When you weren’t a princess it wasn’t this hard.” – Hae Young
“I guess we need to get tougher.” – Seol

I love this response so much. The subtext I got from it was very much ‘well tough because I am the princess so deal with it’ and it pleases me a lot.

• I love that he gives her a peck and she’s like ‘yeah no’ and then kisses him. Lol. Yeah, let your princess show you how it’s done Hae Young.
